Wife and I went to Aruba in 2001. At that time it was not a well known destination from the UK and we had to fly via Schipol to connect to KLM's flight to Lima, Peru that stopped at Aruba to refuel.

Aruba was very good then, probably still is, and we have often thought about a second visit. I think there are now direct flights from the UK: Monarch, maybe?

Bear in mind that there are two distinct areas for hotels. First, there's the so-called high rise area towards the north west of Aruba where there are all the large high rise hotels belonging to USA chains...Marriott, Westin etc...and where most of the people from the USA stay. They looked very busy to us. Then there's the so-called low rise area towards the central west area of Aruba where there are individually owned low rise hotels where most Europeans stay, especially the Dutch.

We stayed at the Baccuti Beach Resort in the low rise area which was super. I know it has been further delevloped since we were there but it still looks very good. Due to its location it has a particularly large beach and never got anywhere near crowded when we were there. Should we go again to Aruba we'd certainly stay there again.

Some nice restaurants there. We particularly liked Madam Janette's. Of course, the hotels in the high rise area have USA standard restaurants if this suits you.

Not a lot to do in Aruba. The east side is rugged and not fully accessible without an off road vehicle. There was nowehere to stay on that side. Always worth a visit because of the scenery, rough seas etc.

We've been to maybe a dozen or so Caribbean islands and Aruba is one of the better in our view.

While we were there on our 3rd day of 15 days, 9.11 occured, but that's another story!
