I went to my local Jaguar dealer today with the purpose of finding out how much a used XF would cost me. When the sums were done, I can get a new 2.2d (200) for the same money as a 2 year old 3.0d, plus I get 3 yrs free servicing, 3 yrs manufacturer's warranty and no MOT to go for.

I am very tempted to say the least but part of me thinks I should have the V6.

Has anyone here got a 2.2d? Are they a good car or should I buy the 3-litre?

Cheers.

Have you done the sums on a new 3.0? It's "only" £3k more but you will get a better residual value and the dealer gets an additional 2% margin to play with, so it might not work out too much more per month.... Happy to some numbers for you if you want?

Ashley, thnaks for the reply - I think the 3k dealer deposit contrib and 4.9% APR was only for the 2.2 but correct me if I'm wrong.

The only supported finance plans are the 4.90% apr 2/3/4 year PCP with £500 deposit contribution on a 3.0D Luxury and £1,000 on everything else. This then gives you the 3 year service plan.

Any other deposit contribution is just discount from dealer margin.

There is also a 2 year 0% apr plan but you then lose the deposit contribution and costs a portion of the dealer margin to set up so doesn't work out for most people.

Sounds like they have stock 2.2's to shift.

They have 4 to get rid of by the end of the month - the business manager said as much.

from the 'real world' mpg figures I've seen, they don't seem to be any more economical the 3.0D (ours averaged 35-37mpg over 50k miles) and seemingly the 8 speed gearbox doesn't work that well with the smaller diesel engine in that its forever changing gear. Mind you the torque figure is pretty impressive for the smaller engined diesel.

Have a look at XF Forum - friendly bunch and you'll get some good advice there. Personally I'll never have another Jaguar but thats a different story....

I've only ever owned one Jag and that was an S-Type. Not having one of those again but prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt.....

I've driven the first 190bhp 2.2D and the subsequent 200 bhp 2.2D and the difference is quite notable, the 200 does not seem to have an issue with the gearbox, I think they changed programming. Its refined, fast and I achieved 43 MPG on a trip down to Diver and back. I was fairly impressed, I drive an XJ and Guy Salmon give me one of these whilst my car is being serviced. The handling, grip and ride comfort where all better then my previous 5 series and I have found the Jaguar to be far more reliable. I'd never by a German car again but thats another story. I think my next will be a 3.0D S XF.....

Morning Gents, I purchased a new XK 2.2D Sport last September I have covered 11000 miles with no issues at all, I have a 40 mile commute to work, fast A roads and motorway get 45mpg, its quite at motorway speed, seat are very comfy and supportive, 8 speed gearbox is very good, but can get confussed when coming out of a slow turn, stop/start work well, under normal driving conditions the 3.0D as better acceleration,I go for it if you are happy with the deal,

I'm being offered a 2.2 Luxury, they want about 6k down and 350 a month.... then after 3 years hand in and walk away or take another... The XJ is going in for a 60K service next week and I will have one all week.. not sure I could part with my XJ though.... Ash does this dound about right on the figures, haven't gone in to details just a quick 3 minute chat with GS in TD?? I think their are a lot of 2.2's hanging around at the mo, would rather have the sport though...

I was offered a 2.2D luxury for (rough ball park figures of) £5k down and £320 a month. I'm still waiting for summat more firm.

I had a 2.2 200 as a hire car on a recent visit to the UK and was quite surprised by it. I expected it to fell underpowered, but it was OK. The engine noise is more rough than the 3L. The only odd part was it would change down 2 ratios on pressing the brake when going downhill (10%+). This made the engine rev very high and gave too much engine braking. I don't know if it was just this one car, or whether there is a software problem?

V12 / Seeker,

Will have a look at what's in stock and put some firm figures together for you if you like? Worst case will ensure you are getting a fair deal.

Perhaps you could drop me a PM so that I can send you some numbers without cluttering up the thread?

After 18 months, time for a thread resurrection!

After some deliberation, I didn't buy an XF but went for an MB E Class Coupe 350 - very rapid and competent but a bit dull and despite having 'sports' seats with adjustable lumbar supports, I found it a bit uncomfortable on my daily 2 x 25 mile commute. So I revisited Jaguar and have decided to take the plunge on a 2.2d (190) Premiumm Luxury. A bit down on power on the MB but the spec of it should make it a very pleasant & comfortable place to spend 90 minutes a day (B&W 1200W Audio, DAB, heated / cooled seats, heated steering wheel, heated front windscreen etc etc) .

Hopefully picking it up on Monday.

Good move.

I was tempted by the E class coupe when I changed my previous XF.

An extended test drive convinced me that they didn't do anything as well as the Jag and I passed.

Nice looking Jag. And let's face it, all Mercs are either dull or ugly, or even both biggrin

Enjoy the Jag, but if you can change to a 3.0, it'll be a load more fun.

I did look at 3.0s but I think the pre-facelift models don't look so good. Perhaps in 12-18 months a facelift 3.0D portfolio will be down to £20k

Drive the deal is doing £5-7k off on the dealer finance... Might be a good negotiating tool
