A few months ago I saw a post that had a link to a site where with just the reg number you could check the MOT status of a vehicle with just the reg number. PH search is down still so can anyone help and provide either the link or the original post ?

Thanks cerbieherts, That link requires you to have Reg number PLUS other details.

and thats the problem I only have the reg number, owner can't find the other papers and I want to buy it and drive home but need to tax it first.

To use this service you will need the vehicle registration mark along with an MOT test number from one of the following:
• VT20 test certificate
• VT30 refusal certificate
or the document reference number from
• V5C registration certificate

I'm no expert but isn't buying a car without a v5 a very bad idea?

Yes. But also remember that a V5 is only evidence of the registered keeper, not proof of ownership.

I've never seen an online site that gives MOT details from the reg number alone.

Surely completely pointless - if you need other data from the MOT cert to check it on line - then you don't need to check it on line as you already have the MOT cert. What value does this add ? Or am i missing something here.

The current MOT certificates are now only really printouts and not like the previous versions, which had watermarks and other security details.

As this is all so easy to fake these days, the real MOT is online only.

Thanks all for the input, I know the car and owner very well, merely trying to get the car safely & legally, from A to B and just making sure it has an MOT to do so, no fears about the legitimacy of ownership.

With regard to 'is MOT info available online with just reg number" ?

Yes it is (was in December 'ish anyway) There was a post on PH with a link and I put in all 5 car reg numbers of the 5 cars in my household and checked the MOT dates, I didn't need any other info, I also obtained the 'history' of the checks with any advisories as well.

Hi.
From my knowledge you are not able to check the MOT of a vehicle unless you have the V5 unique 11 digit ref number along with the VRN.

If you see a site that allows you to do otherwise then i would not trust that site. MOTs are online now for the Police to do checks of vehicles and move away from the old HORT1.

If you know the car well cant you just ask the owner if it has an up to date MOT?

Cheers

This site tells you when the Tax is due, not the MOT though....

DVLA Vehicle Enquiry - requires Make and Reg Number / gives Date of Liability, Date of First Registration, Year of Manufacture, Cylinder Capacity (cc), CO2 Emissions, Fuel Type, Export Marker, Vehicle Status, Vehicle Colour, Vehicle Type Approval: https://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/app...

MOT Status Check - requires Reg Number and Test Cert Number or Document reference number from V5C: http://motinfo.direct.gov.uk/internet/jsp/ECSID-In...

RAC Car Data Check - requires Reg Number / gives Make, Model, Year & Engine Size: http://www.rac.co.uk/buying-a-car/rac-car-data-che...

For some reason the link doesn't work even though it's trying to go to the correct web site.

I found I had to type the full url manually in to the browser as www.vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk
