I wonder how you even responde to things like this if it were the result of military attack.
Say it was a cross channel ferry and an non EU nation sunk it deliberatly what would our responce be. The rational part of my mind says sactions, international condemnation, shouting in the UN etc, I just don't see war if it were a one off. In the waters around Korea though hmm maybe but then you are talking 100,000 deaths or more so is it worth it. But then do the South Koreans just accept being killed off now and again. Really hard to see a logical outcome to all of this.
To my mind in the scenario you gave of cross channel ferry would be huge sanctions but also I would advocate a 1 off bombing raid on a military target. It shows that you are not afraid to use force and that you can enter their air space when you want to.Say it was a cross channel ferry and an non EU nation sunk it deliberatly what would our responce be. In North Korea it is a little different. I suspect NK is just going to keep pushing and pushing until they get an excuse for a war. It is the only way they can hold onto power in the long run. Sooner or later the people will get fed up with going hungry and being backward, it has happened in every other similar country that i can think of.

Disagree, the last thing NK wants is all out war. They don't have the equipment or logistics, and their next door neighbour won't let them. In North Korea it is a little different. NK doesn't want war. They want the threat of war, and stories about their gallant fighters operating under the waves, and fighting for the freedom of the NK people.Munter said:

Someone from Russia has a word with someone in NK to commit an outrage which leads to conflict in the east, distracting the USA, leaving Putin free to pick off the rest of Ukraine...

Have you read his last book(Command Authority)? Struck a cord when first hearing of the troubles in the Ukraine. Someone from Russia has a word with someone in NK to commit an outrage which leads to conflict in the east, distracting the USA, leaving Putin free to pick off the rest of Ukraine...

The ferry sinking in SK waters. Another NK torp?
From the BBC:
"It is not yet clear what caused the incident, but witnesses described hearing an impact, before the ship listed and quickly sank.
One passenger told the YTN news channel: "We heard a big thumping sound and the boat stopped."
Don't trust the north, ever.
a torpedo would make much more of an impact than a big thump, it collided with something, what that something was could be anything from a chunk of land (it was off course) to a subFrom the BBC:

Even then I expect NK leaders are wondering if it can be claimed as some kind of victory for the north.
