Windwill burnt to a crisp, headless snake woman despatched (with no assistance, which is a first), and off to the Iron Keep . . .

Just got to the Shrine of Winter today. Had to look up what to do as I couldn't find anything else to do apart from an optional boss that keeps kicking my ass in the Iron Keep. I'd completely forgotten about the Shrine of Winter redface Had a quick run in, spoke to some lass in the castle, then bottled it, ran out and saved it. I've turned into such a wuss biggrin

I'm still finding this game is by no means easy, but is so rewarding once you get past an area that's been toying with you for the past hour or so.

Just used a bonfire ascetic for the Old Iron King and found it surprisingly easy. He used a lot more fire breath and had a lot not HP but the tactics were the same and just a bit more patience. But hey an extra 79000 souls not going to complain.

The Iron Keep is totally kicking my arse! I ground the first section (up to the Smelter Demon) clear of enemies, but the Smelter Demon itself seems totally impossible! I have had over a dozen goes at it, my lightning sword does about 80 damage per hit, but I can only get two or three hits in before he smashes the crap out of me. I have tried summoning some help a couple of times, and even with three of us whaling on him we've been wiped out before he gets below half health. I am level 100, with good strength/dex/vitality but zero magic.

I also keep getting splattered by those turtle dudes in the next section (with the platform you can lower), and to top off a frustrating evening I got sliced n diced by three different invading phantoms in the same area!!

If anyone's having problems with bosses or areas add me on PSN (beardedmule) and I'll drop my summon down.

I've done all the minor bosses and currently doing Drangleic Castle. Approx level 140 Knight with a +10 Mastadon Greatsword.

I didn't play DS2 through this week, but did get a short session in on Friday night, but starting from the first bonfire in Harvest valley, I made it to the second bonfire and farmed the dark magic giant things next to that bonfire until they stopped respawning. Tonight I will push out and explore the area further.

I've just beat the Smelter Demon. Luckily, he is an optional boss and I suspect you could come back later and whoop him all over if you wanted to. Or if you couldn't beat him the first time around! Anyway, I was lucky, as I put a summon sign down at the fog gate and got summoned in to another player's game. He also summoned Lucatiel of Mirrah from her summon sign near the boss. The three of us took the demon on and won. As a result, I was returned to human form upon beating the boss (possibly as a bonus of being in the Sunlight covenant?). I then went into battle myself with summoned help from a player and Lucatiel. Again, we won. Lucatiel is critical in this fight, not because she does a massive amount of damage but because she has such high health. Really, you're looking to distract the demon in this fight because he has high HP/DEF. So even when my summoned phantom was killed, Lucatiel distracted the demon long enough to let me get my strikes in.

If you can, get some some of the Alonne Knight Captain gear before the fight. So clear out the area beforehand, taking care where possible not to knock the captains into the lava. I have a helm and a suit of armour, I didn't wear the helm but I did wear the armour. It has fire resistance and means that during the fight, you'll avoid taking constant fire damage when you're near the boss. Be wary though, his explosive moves in the last 3rd of his health bar still really hurt! And use a blunt weapon. My Magic Mace was quite effective, my Heide Knight Sword and Katana didn't even scratch him. It seems to be a boss geared towards co-op play, I imagine he would be a total tt to fight alone!

Thanks for the tips, i managed to beat him in the end with a couple of assistants, despite getting stuck in a wall at the end! I then went back and beat the pursuer, it took me about two hours of trying and i only got 3000 souls! I have managed to get as far as the big dragon guy once, but keep getting splattered by those ironclad guys that lurk in the corridors.

So close to the end now. Have unlocked all normal bonfires, went back and killed the smelter demon, then the pursuer again. Only things I have left to do are kill the ancient dragon atop the dragon's shrine, the king dude wandering around aimlessly in that cave (I've got the other four giant souls, just need the dragon's), then head towards killing the final boss. I'm somewhere between 80-90 hours on this, so has been good value for money for me smile

Missed a few bits and pieces from having not summoned NPCs for battles, but I've done most of it hollow biggrin

Oh and only part way through the assassinations. I can't stab Cale in the back, and I think the ancient dragon will allow me to get the item I need from him.

Finally toppled the ancient dragon, toughest fight so far. Didn't quite get to the stage of putting the controller through the TV, but I would certainly say it wasn't fun. Hopefully the rest should be a breeze now smile

Yay, finished it finally. Still not killed Vendrick though, he kicks my arse every time frown Now, do I leave it alone, or do I persevere and try and kill the lanky goon? I've the HD FFX and FFX-2 still in packaging tempting me, now that will be my life over biggrin

I beat Mytha first try last night, she barely even felt like a boss fight. Bosh, onto the next one.

Out of interest, what is at the bottom of the well in Majula? I bought the 12000 soul ladder (more for the achievement than anything) and climbed down, dropped onto another ledge and found myself in a deep area with the falling zombies - except these guys let off a huge explosion when they go down, which killed me. What is the area down here? Will I eventually come through this area by exploring the rest of the game?

Ultimately, you come to one of the bosses whose souls you need to progress - the Rotten, down in Black Gulch.

I'm on my second character and I still think the worst boss is either the Royal Rat Authority the Royal Rat Vanguard.

fking asshole of bosses. Would rather take on 2 Vendricks with no giant souls and a broken straight sword

Finally completed the game, and have to agree Vendrick is an ass. Killed the dragon and all other bosses but on my second run through killing that sod is the goal now.

Did notice NG+ is actually easier, although the enemies are tougher, carrying over all my equipment, items and skills really helps.

BTW.. for some good farming early on, leave your summon sign at the first bonfire at Heides Tower of Flame. Lotsa of area clears and boss fights going on there. Also had three invasions while a phantom, the look on their little faces when they realised they were heavily outnumbered and about to get mullered was priceless. smile

I am getting behind you guys, I think I am around halfway now. I just killed the skeleton chariot, thought that was a really good boss fight and very entertaining! I also went through into the shaded woods but when I get to the part with the giant frog, I kep getting insta-cursed. Is there any good curse-resistant gear that makes this area more survivable? ALternatively, I could buy a ladder and drop down the hole in Majula, not sure which area to visit next.

I think the intended progression is to follow on through the area where you killed the Chariot and kill the Skeleton Lords. They are at the other end of the Huntsman's Copse. Once you beat them, a passage to the Harvast Valley is revealed, which takes you on to Earthen Peak.
