Evening all. Just starting to plan a holiday to the Italian Lakes, taking in a bit of driving along the way. As we're on holiday and not on a deadline, we'd like to stay over somewhere on the way down, and on the way back, so we're looking for chateau-esque places where we can get a decent meal as well as a nice place to stay. Would prefer not to have to go out in the evening, so, somewhere with a restaurant.

Our route is entirely flexible but once we clear Reims, we could either head via Nancy, maybe Strasbourg or Colmar, then dropping into Switzerland and down to the lakes, or alternatively go down towards Dijon, Geneva, through the MB tunnel and on to the lakes that way.

So really I'm looking for recommendations for chateaux, or otherwise interesting hotels/relais probably broadly speaking in the Burgundy region.

Thanks.

Beaune is a lovely town full of decent restaurants - we aim to spend a night on the way home from the Alps each time - we usually stay here http://www.lecedre-beaune.com/uk/index.php - it has an excellent restaurant, but it is not cheap!!

Relais & Chateaux has a good selection of chateaux and are normally up to a pretty good standard.

We have also stayed here when not wanting to be in the town http://www.castel-tres-girard.com/uk/index.php - again very good with a lovely restaurant.

The D996 is well worth a drive along when in the area as well - the best bit joins Troyes to Dijon (roughly - it starts as the D396 at the Troyes end iirc) smile

Currently Desenzano del Garda, based both on recommendation and on ease of train travel to Venice for a visit, but if you've anything up your sleeve, would certainly have a look!

Ah soz - Garda is the one we haven't yet visited.

If you were heading to Como we always stay here and love it - http://www.lakecomo-hotel-ladarsena.com - one of the few hotels actually on the lake not behind the busy road - it was an old boat house. Just make sure you ask for a lake view - we've been there four/five times now and never been disappointed. It's only 3 star so not grand but a very good restaurant and the owners are terrific.

If you were going to Maggiore then http://www.hotelverbano.it/en_US/home - magical destination smile If you are needing to park your car the Hotel Regina Palace will let you park it in their underground car park if you explain you are staying on the islands for a modest fee, and the ferry leaves from opposite them.

Have fun - I love the Italian lakes - we go there most years.

There are indeed! Thanks a lot for that, with the other suggestions I'm sure we'll find what we are looking for.
