I've booked a cheapy Ryanair flight to Carcassonne and intend to stay in the region for a week. Hiring a car and would like to drive through the Pyrenees into Spain but am open to suggestions. Thought I might visit the coast around Begur for a few days too. Any must visits? Great roads that need to be done? Any advice welcome regarding hotels/restaurants too. Thanks!

It's a bit of a drive but the Millau viaduct is worth seeing.

I love it around Begur - been going with my parents, then my mates (a bunch of Dutch guys meet up with us every year, as they have done since 1984 when we were kids) and now with my OH since 1981.

I can also thoroughly recommend this place....

...which isn't far from Carcassonne. My mate Tommy is the chef and is second to none. Some nice roads round there and you can also drive over to Andorra (traffic jam permitting).

It's quite novel in that area between Carcassonne heading up the road to Andorra. It starts off normal south of France, then around Camon it almost looks south American and as you get higher it looks Alpine. All in an hour or two.
