Hi All,

Ive been suffering from psioratic arthritis for a number of years on my ankles and knees. Its very sporadic and when it hits im pretty much immobile through pain. Over the years the doscs and specialists have tried various drugs and remedies and although some treat each flare up, nothing else seems to have worked. Therefore my fitness and general shape has suffered. ( currently 14 stone and 178 cm, age 40. 31% BF and 28.1 BMI.

In Feb after being harrangued by a mate I tried acupuncture. Im a very cynical person and didn't think much of it, however since Feb and going once a month since then I havent had any issues with the arthritis, to the point where Ive now joined a gym and started attending again. In a week im slowly started building up to running 5k which is something I thougth I would have to put behind me. To those of you suffering from any ailments then I woudl recomend trying it to see if it benefits you. Its changed my life for the better.

Because of the pain of the last few years I really appreciate the opportunity I now have to get fit and get in shape. Up until now I have had to make do with sporadic cycling (MTB and road) when the arthritis allows.

My goals are to get to circa 12 stone by the end of July. Currently Im going to the gym about 3 times a week and doing a 5k row followed by 1k swim ( alternate lengths of breast stroke and freestyle). My intention is to focus on this intially with a couple of 1 hr bike rides a week thrown in until the weight starts to come down. Im aslo eating much better and have cut out sugar as much as reasonably possible from my diet.

initial goal is to work down to 13 stone though the diet and aerobic method, but I wanted to get some feedback on whether the rowing/swimming combo is the best use of my time and will satisfy my objectives or if I should try and mix it with other things. When I hit 13 stone I then want to have a plan to get to 12.

long term goal is 12 stone and sub 20% body fat. a reduction of circa 30 lbs at a target of 2.5 a week which seems reasonable.

Thanks
