So, I am out in Nuremberg with work at the tail end of next week. I have a Friday morning free until about 1pm, so any suggestions on what to do? My hotel is spitting distance from the main rail hub so can get out and about via rail/taxi/foot easy enough. I don't mind getting up early to go and see things.

So far, I am thinking of heading over to Dokumentationszentrum Reichsparteitagsgelaende which is basically where the Nazi rallies were held, and is now a museum. Looks very interesting, especially when I have an interest in WW2.

So, any other things to consider?

I used to work a lot in Nuremberg and usually stayed at the Grand Hotel opposite central station. Seeing as you only have a morning you could do a lot worse than explore inside the walls of the old town. If you're located near the station as you suggest then you won't be far away at all. The walled town includes some great churches, old squares and the castle. Right in the middle is Frauenkirche which is quite spectacular. You could do worse than have lunch at the Heilig Geist Spital - an old hospital over the river that incorporates a restaurant with great typical Bavarian food.

Just outside the walls is the Palace of Justice where the Nazi trials were held. Has an awesome exhibition and the actual court where the trials were held. Well worth a visit. I doubt you could manage both the old town and the palace in one morning. Very easy to spend a lot of time in the Palace.

As for food - wherever you end up eating try not to miss Nuremberger sausages, potato salad and kraut. And of course great weissbier and a bottle of Frankonian wine to take home for the missis. Although if you have to be done by 1pm this might be a challenge biggrin

Have fun smile

Hi Angus,

Thanks for taking the time to write all that out! I am off out there on Wednesday so I will take onboard what you have said.

I am staying on the other side of the station to the Grand Hotel but equally close. I think I shall have a nose around, early doors, of the old town, maybe even see if I can grab some breakfast out and about. I will then try and get over to the Palace and spend some time there, grab some food and then hot-foot back to the station to get to the airport.

Beer and wine will be tried, tested and sourced for export! wink

Thanks again for your help

Ask your hosts about the brewery restaurant with the steam engine in. Can't remember the name of it but our German client insisted he take us there, where at 9pm they have a musical ceremony to celebrate a steam engine start up in the middle of the large dining room. Utterly bizarre but great fun smile

Edit: Here's the website: http://www.erlebnisgastronomie-nuernberg.de/start.... Proper hearty grub and good beer!

I love Nuremberg.

'Chongs' American Diner is a must...even though you're in Germany.

When ordering, bear in mind the sausages are far from being the largest (think chipolata). The option to order more than one is there for a reason...

Ah, had to check as I was never sure if Nuremburg was Nürnberg.

I don't have any special tips as I only went there for one for very hot day, with a hangover.

What I do recall is that it's a very picturesque Bavarian city, so for a morning and a bit just wander around, take in the sites and enjoy some proper Bavarian beer and food.

M.

PS When we went (more than 15 years ago), there were Neo-Nazis holding a protest in the main square (not very many though, so not terribly threatening, but it was rather eye-opening)
