Will be holidaying in Italy this summer and we're spending a couple of days in Rome. We want to go and see the Colosseum and The Vatican City but obviously would like avoid the queues (kids in tow).

I understand you can buy tickets in advance but as is the way with these things there are numerous outlets for this. Any advice appreciated as to vendors and what else to pack in to the time we have there.

Just found this site. Seems ok.

Also have a look at this. We really enjoyed it, but may need to book in advance too......

Watch for pickpockets - not quite as bad as Barcelona, but on all four occasions I've been to Rome I've seen the old shove a paper under someones nose whilst the other nicks the camera trick...

Thanks. What I was really looking for was recommendation from anyone who has used any of these services. I can find plenty but don't know which one to go for.

Never used any - always found it easy enough to buy tickets at the time... that said, no kids in tow...

ETA - easy enough for one of you to queue, whilst the other does the pictures with the Gladiators (expect to get fleeced!) and ice creams.

We just went to the booth and bought them but we were out of season (November). We did get approached by loads of people offering the world if we went with their tours including immediate access and cheaper tickets. We declined as there was no queue (remember, November) and the price was not that bad anyway and some Aussie trying to butter you up (verbally!) seemed a bit of a con.

Also the people dressed up outside get the hump when you take a photo and don't give them any loot.

Watch them at the height of the season - have been known to flog fake tickets (mate of mine got stung)

We were in Rome last weekend, admittedly not the highest of high season, but the queues for tickets at both places were not that long around 9am.
In fact, I think people were walking straight in at the Colosseum with no queue at all.
Most hotels should be able to sort the tickets easily enough with a small fee.

We were in Rome a few years back in June. No queues for the Colosseum and I think around 10 mins for the Vatican/St. Peters. Nothing to worry aboiut.

What was far busier was the Pantheon & Trevi Fountain - absolutely heaving. But free!

For the Colosseum, buy tickets at the Palatine Hill ticket office which is a few minutes walk away (the Colosseum ticket is also valid for Palatine Hill and vice-versa).

For the Vatican, guided tours get priority entrance with no queuing, and there are firms that pretend to deliver a guided service, but the guide leaves you as soon as you are inside - http://www.viator.com/tours/Rome/Skip-the-Line-Vat...

Might be worth checking out the Roma Pass. This has a queue jump for the Colosseum iirc. I think you can get them from official tourist info sites around the city. I'm sure I also remember a stand at the airport.

Top tip from G3org3y
We did that, get the Roma pass from the bus office at the airport as part of your package when you get your bus into town. It offers queue jump etc for Collosseum etc.A highlight for cultural art and Italian historical sculptures is the Villa Borghese but you need to book the day before through your hotel otherwise you will not get in.

Might be worth taking a monopod or tripod into the Vatican. No flash photography in some areas and the ceiling paintings are amazing.
