Just thought I'd throw this out to you guys as tomorrow I'm driving from Bristol to BR for a service, then on up to Aberdeen via Edinburgh.

Not looking to add any big distance to the drive, but any recommended routes slightly of the beaten path? Any fun detours in the borders I should be taking?

thanks

Dear God man - that's about 550 miles eek - won't you get drummed out the club for putting that many miles on an aston?

If you have to actually go to Edinburgh & time is not of the essence, I would turn off just after Carlisle onto the A7 heading for Selkirk & Galasheils - much more scenic, but do watch for cameras !

Going to smash me through the 90k mark! Not scared of a few miles. I just try not to think of the fuel bill. Already done almost 2 tanks since Saturday...

Will look up the route you've mentioned, thanks.

Being from up that way, and with several years regularly traveling between Inverness, Aberdeen and Perth on a motorbike. I can say there are some great roads to break the monotony of dual carriageways.
Can help you with the drive past Perth. Keeping you heading east, here are a few suggestions.

Simple A road fun just to keep you off the dual carriageway doesn’t take much longer timewise.

Perth – Scone – Coupar Angus – Forfar – Montrose – Stonehaven and either take the slug road towards Banchory or the Netherly towards Peterculter

Feeling adventurous? add in after Forfar Edzell – Fettercairn over Cairn o' Mount up to Banchory

More demanding routes, wouldn’t really fancy it after a long drive tbh. Take a while longer, also don’t blame me if you get stuck behind a caravan.

Perth – Blarigowrie – Braemar – Aberdeen…. Brilliant fun.

Or Braco – Crieff – Dunkeld – Blarigowrie – and above

You really visit my hometown Nairn though….not to see the town itself, just to drive from Ballater over the Lecht then through Grantown.

I’m sure some Southern Jessie will help you up from the Borders lol

More miles = more smiles! My car is the daily drive. Wouldn’t have it any other way . Any excuse to drive it. I bought mine in Amersham, drove it up to Aberdeen. 6 months on new job in Surrey. Couldn’t wait to get the car back down. Just need to find some decent roads down here.

A90 between Dundee & Aberdeen.. infamous for speed cameras. Heaps of them. Even though they are painted in bright colours, some are still hidden behind trees, signs and corners. Your as well sticking to the back roads.

This is my neck of the woods & I'd second your recommendation for Forfar - Edzell – Fettercairn over Cairn o' Mount up to Banchory. I do this route when visiting relatives in Lossiemouth.

A90 from Forfar > Brechin > Aberdeen is indeed filled with fixed cameras & vans.

All of the above, but if you can avoid the a90 it's speed camera heaven...

Perth – Blarigowrie – Braemar – Aberdeen…. Brilliant fun. +1 that statement (can't remember who suggested it) it's ace fun, in fact I spotted Clarkson test driving the new jag f type on Saturday on the queens circular outside Braemar, full top gear camera crew in attendance.

We followed him for about three miles in a battered old focus.........we were all very excited wink

But yes brilliant road and very good fun in almost any car!!

Cheers

If you are on the M90 in Fife take the turn off at Jnt 6 and you will end up driving thro the Gleneagles estate. Go into the hotel grounds stop at the Dormy Clubhouse and try a Lorne sausage sandwich ( the clubhouse menu is great for that kind of snack). The Braco road is just out of the top hotel exit beyond the clubhouse. We spend a lot of time there and I bought a Snooper 3zero which is a GPS and laser warning device which has helped keep me points free, I know one driver who got 12 points on a return trip to Aberdeen, she thought the bright flashes at night were lightning. rolleyes
