Hey all

I have a Golf 1.6 FSI automatic Mk5. I was driving around, stopped at some traffic lights and the engine started misfiring. The engine management light had previously been on (had filled up with 97 instead of my usual 99) and now it started to flash. When I got home I ran VCDS and read the following codes:

4 Faults Found:

17441 - Sensor for Nox (G295): Signal too Low

P1033 - 002 - Lower Limit Exceeded - Intermittent

16684 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected

P0300 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded - MIL ON

16685 - Cylinder 1: Misfire Detected

P0301 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded - MIL ON

18528 - Post-Catalyst Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor Correction; Bank 1: Too Lean

P2096 - 002 - Lower Limit Exceeded - MIL ON

Readiness: 0000 0000

Cleared all the codes, ran the engine for a couple of minutes and rescanned. This is the second scan:

2 Faults Found:

16684 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected

P0300 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded

16685 - Cylinder 1: Misfire Detected

P0301 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded

Readiness: 1110 0101

The engine is misfiring at idle and when accelerating all through the RPM range. Any ideas what could be wrong?

Thanks

Could be the ignition coil on cylinder number 1.

Thanks for the super fast reply smile

How can I check if it's the coil pack? Is it a matter of buying one and seeing if the fault still happens? Or can I swap with different cylinder and see if the error code changes?

It's due in for a full service/MOT within the next few weeks so quite keen to sort this ASAP.

maybe pull the plug out first and inspect it, if it looks good then switch the coils as suggested and see if the missfire code moves cylinders. (clear the codes first)

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll report back if it's not the coil pack.

Not sure about the 1.6, but on the 1.8 and 2.0 with the coil on plugs there's a recall/updated part to be fitted.
May be worth a call to vw before buying a new pack biggrin

Moved the coil from cyl 1 to 4 and the code moved. Rang VW but my coils weren't on the recall list so bought one for £26 inc VAT and fitted it. Back to normal smile

Thanks for the help guys!
