Hi guys smile. Here's the situation, my dad wants a BOV for his 05 WRX. I'd like to get him one as a present. What do you recommend? Nothing silly money please, I'm still year 11 :P.
Thank you very much in advance

I'd advise him to stick with the standard recirculating Air Bypass Valve which keeps his gear changes feeling lovely and smooth as opposed to aggressive and uncomfortable for his passengers.

Perhaps wishing for something more bling and even better for his car like an oil catch can, fuel swirl pot, adjustable fuel pressure regulator with gauge, 3-port electronic boost controller, some nice coloured silicone hoses etc.... any of these can be had for the price of a useless BOV that goes Pssshhhhttt, and spoils a nice driving car.

Sorry but i for one couldn't recommend a BOV for anyone's car unless they really needed it. smile

Yep a good replacement recirculating DV will be the only option. Atmostpheric ones do no favours for the engine so why bother?

The STI I'm collecting on the weekend has one from Forge which I've had on other turbo charged cars before with no problems at all.

"useless BOV that goes Pssshhhhttt"
Ouch.
I suppose that's good advice.
However what if we do want something useless that goes Pssshhhhttt? wink

Don't mean to sound Anti-Bov and on monster builds they are a must but the standard Subaru reirc system works really well at over 400bhp and is super reliable. You can take the recirculating pipe off them, blank it off and run it VTA but they aren't very loud.

If you must have one you should at least buy the very best that you can. In my experience cheap ones often cause issues with leaking boost, sticking pistons, weak springs, cause vacuum leaks and generally sound gash. In my business they are nothing but a pain in the rear end because they are normally rubbish cheap ones on your average lightly modded scoob. They are the bain of my life.

Don't get a used/2nd hand one and spend over £100-£150 to get a decent one. You get what you pay for so buy cheap at your peril.

That's good, that's sort of what I was expecting to pay. Thank you.

I had a forge one on my WRX. No problems.

I then turned 24, realised it sounded daft, and bought an STi wink

It'd be worth talking to an Impreza tuner to explain to you how the BOV could, if not mapped into your setup, could potentially damage the car. It might change your mind.

Since he has a TD05 Turbo, why not just blank off the DV. Sounds much better and will cost about £20 smile

VTA ones are a mistake, my last classic had one when I bought it. I'll admit that my inner five year old loved the noise when I was pressing on but it sounded embarrassing round town. Add in the fact that it made the car run worse then a re-circ valve and that's even before you consider the fact that it had the potential to cause extra wear and tear/damage to the car
