Call me a girl, but as I progress from my 20s to my 30s I'm finding beer harder and harder to stomach in any quantity. Don't get me wrong, I love a pint of real ale but whereas I used to be able to drink a good 5-6 pints without too much of an issue, the same quantity today leaves me feeling quite awful the following morning, very bloated and I'm up half the night in the boys room.

My missus has got me onto G&Ts and I'm quite impressed. Easy to drink and with sufficient strength to make me tipsy after only a (large) glass or two. So far, no bloatedness and very little effect the following morning.

However, I've only drunk "cheap" gin and tonics and would like to experiment a little.

So; very keen to hear what gin and tonics I should be buying and any specific recipes to try?

I've been told that Bombay Sapphire and Hendricks are two good ones, the latter with cucumber and not lemon/lime. Fever tree tonics have also been mentioned...

I'm off most of next week so will buy in some recommendations. Let battle commence.

I think you're already on the right track! I love Hendricks, Bombay a close second. We tried Greenalls recently but I found it too sweet, similarly I will only buy Schweppes tonic (as I can't always afford Fevertree!) as its not too sweet.

it must be something that happens as you hit your 30's!

I decided around my 30th that I had had enough of lager, it bloated me and after several pints just put me to sleep as well as gave me a gut so decided to try spirits and mixers. My main tipple now is Southern Comfort and ginger ale, failing that Vodka and ginger is a close second.

There are two big gin threads already, so well worth having setting google at PH.

Fifty Pounds is the one that seems to be going down best in our drinks cabinet at the moment.

This stuff makes a lovely G&T:

Their Vodka is also excellent.

I've got more into G&T as I've got further into my 30's too! My Sister recently bought me a bottle of Gin Mare - it really is lovely, I'm really enjoying it.

And, if you're ever near The Dorchester in London, you must have a G&T made with their own 'in house' gin.

Never tonic for me - too bitter - give me the more sophisticated taste of Gin & Soda with cucumber or lime - never lemon.

Another here, Martin Millers is simply unsurpassed, especially the Westbourne stregth. Straight, over ice with a dash of citrus is gorgeous, if not more than a little dangerous biggrin

On another tilt, the stronger expression of Cadenheads Old Raj (55%) is well worth a go. The high alcohol content withstands a longer than normal G&T and remains particularly flavoursome.

Bombay Sapphire is like perfume.

Try Sacred, Sipsmith or, No3 (there are plenty of other new ones too) with Fever Tree tonic.

Hendricks, Hendricks, Hendricks! That is without doubt the best gin money can buy. Served with cucumber instead of lime, very refreshing!
