Spanish translation required

Hi, wondering if anyone can help.
I'm looking to get the following translated from English to Spanish:-

'Better to die on your feet than live forever on your knees'

Ummmmm it does not directly translate well, but I would say

"Es mejor morir de pie que vivir siempre de rodillas"

What context are you using it in as there may be an appropriate Spanish phrase which you can substitute

From a recently found Spanish collegue I have at work:-

Es mejor morir de pie que vivir para siempre de rodillas!

Pretty close - just one difference.
