"No smoking. This is a food premises"

And I don't mean a scribble on a sheet of A4 - this was a commercially produced vinyl sign.
What's so bad about that?
It's true that it's illegal to smoke in there. Is the problem that it being somewhere food is served is superfluous?
Maybe the sign was there before the smoking ban and it's just to reinforce it? There were plenty of people who wouldn't smoke around food then.

I'm assuming it's the use of the words 'this is a' followed by 'premises', isn't that like saying "this is a buildings"?

Father-in-laws Italian restaurant had a sign outside: "No Park"

Makes more sense if you say it with an accent.

"a premises" is perfectly correct

it's not plural, the word 'premise' is a different use

"a food premises" does sound a little bit clumsy though

I thought that 'premises' was one of those words whose singular and plural were the same. Like the word 'sheep'?

Or, more accurately, it's a word used in the plural but of singular construction. So I guess if you were going to be a completely uptight pedant about things they should have written "these are food premises" or "this is a food establishment". However, "this is a food premises" isn't the complete howler that it's being made out to be.

Exactly. That's why I didn't understand the problem.

People who complain about this country. Gilbert even wrote about them in one of his most famous songs, so it's being going on a long time. Time it bloody well stopped, or if not they should be moved to the top of the little list.

The car I followed for 5 miles through town this afternoon

You'd think that after negotiating several junctions, crossing several roundabouts, and stopping at several sets of traffic lights they would have noticed that they had their hazard lights on frown

Retarded Motherflucking Knobjockey drivers who wish to join a dual carriageway (A120 near Stansted/Dunnmow to be exact) and actually find the time to check mirrors with 10 yards of sliproad left @ 43.7 mph and expect me to wipe out that car in the outside lane just to let you in.

I couldn't tell, I was too focused on the ridiculous hat and sunglasses; merc may be the sponsor but they might find some hats that look a bit less like workwear from a fast food restaurant.
