New Puppy Ella (10 weeks old Labrador) likes waking up just after 4am and then ensuring we wake up too! she is sleeping in the spare room across the hall from our bedroom with a baby gate on the door to keep her in and away from the 2 cats.

She goes to bed brilliantly and settles down with no fuss at all, usually 11pm ish. But like clock work just after 4am she starts crying and making a noise to wake us up! Hubby gets up at 5am anyways week days so has just been getting up earlier to shut her up and let me sleep, but obviously this is not ideal! and definitely not ideal that she of course does it at weekends too.

any ideas what to do? today im changing the curtains which are light cream curtains to some heavy darker ones to see if that helps block out the daylight, but any suggestions welcome please!

very tired puppy mummy!

It will get better our pup is about 19 weeks now and the wake up call is steadily getting later, went from 5am whining for food/toilet to usually about 7am now and sometimes even later.

I think as bladder control gets better and puppy hunger gets less then the sleep will get better.

Get a doggy door so it can come in and out as it pleases? Is your garden secure? Don't worry about cats. They can look after themselves when you bring in a new dog to the house.

I reckon 11pm to 4am is pretty bloody great for a 10wk old pup!
it should get better naturally as it gets older and bladder control/coping with being alone improve.

thanks all, I think I may just be noticing it as for the first week she was brilliant and didn't make a peep but now she has started this routine!

as soon as she is house trained during the night the gate will come off the door and she will have free run of the house during the night, but don't really want her poo'ing everywhere just now, so that room is covered in puppy pads at bedtime laugh

Let her have a run of the house at about 16 weeks if you dare! You will regret it !

I let my mongrel hobo/idiot cross have run of the house, as well as an executive key for the cat flap. Soon learned to poop outside. He never chewed, but he does like to consider toilet roll to be a very good fertiliser, and if left within reach he will spread it out over the lawn.

He is quite the gardener.

haha she *touch wood* has not chewed anything to date but I am such a light sleeper I think she would keep me awake all night, she may be little but sounds like a baby elephant plodding up and down the stairs!

4.20am this morning, the dark curtains made no difference sleep

Ours chewed and whined at night when we first had her as a pup.
Hard work, but worth it in the end.

Training, lots of training.
