Sorry to dig up an old thread!
I've been thinking about going to see some of the planes for a while now, and just wondered when is best to go and where?
Its a 2-3 hour drive each way for us, so want to make sure there will be some planes out!
Is it pot luck? What are the chances of seeing some on a weekend?
Thanks
PS. Awesome photos! I will take my DSLR, but doubt they will be that good!

Pot luck I'm afraid, pick a good weather day and at least if you do have a dreaded blank you aren't sat on the hill in torrential rain. If you happen across the LFA7(T) timetable pay no attention to it, its just hour slots that aircraft CAN book into the TTA to be cleared down to 100ft, this doesn't cover the loop though. Don't go on a weekend either or a bank holiday.
As for where to go, I would say Bwlch or Cad West, Cad has always been my favourite spot. The passes there can be a lot more dynamic and in the summer if you get a GR4 though in the late afternoon/early evening then it can't be beaten for light.
Bwlch:

Cad West:

I was on Cad West a couple of weeks ago and the weather wasn't great but we still got a couple of Tornados (I'd just arrived and was still on the car park!), a Hercules, two Apaches and two F15's so not a bad day.
I'd compare it to fishing, lots of sitting around staring into the distance punctuated by a few seconds of manic activity.

It's opposite Cad East although that probably doesn't help you much.
There is some good information here.
