"......a return stay at my expense. Oh and about that review....."

Recently stayed at a hotel in town, and left a review on an infamous website which allows people to Advise about Trips.
Didn't slate the place, but nor was it outstanding. Distinctly average on every level. For every good point, there was a counteracting poor one. Eg. Excellent standard of fittings and finish in the bathroom.....except it had no bath. And this wasn't an economy lodge type room either. The forecourt was stylish, except it was rammed with cars all the time.
And the hotel itself is in between a builders merchant and a car showroom but has a terrace overlooking the Thames.
Reviewed it accordingly, in a "This is what we found" tone. Most, if not all, of the narrative is factual. We could got back tomorrow and take photos to support the review.
So, the owner phoned me today, very apologetic at first, but then becoming increasingly disappointed that with our review, so much so he's given us 20% off our bill and invited us back "as his guest".
Part of me is impressed, part of me is offended.
He even said "I'm not trying to bribe you......"
Thoughts?

Would it be overly harsh to suggest that he most definitely IS trying to bribe you, and is lying about it?

If it was me, the review would stay and the fact that the follow-up 'phone call took place would be added to it.

That's what I'm coming round to. Some of replies to the really critical reviews are bordering on comical too.
We gave them an "average", and by the look of it they got off lightly!

i cannot see how this cn work for the owner . he cannot improve the location , or magic up a bathroom . he can improve the service you received .
strange , unless he upgrades the room . how many people look at the reviews ?

Take him up on it, if its much better write a review saying so. Lots of hotels / pubs doing this at the moment. You could just as easily be saying "left feedback but owner couldn't even be arsed to respond".

Delete, stay for free, re-review adding in details of bribery.

Or just add in details of bribery.

Why do you say that? It's arguably responsible for a huge improvement in the hotel and restaurant trade.

Also responsible for destroying the lives of thousands of others who are genuinely doing a good/great job- but that cannot stop Mr. Smallkock from trying to play the big man and slate a livelyhood

Yes, I am "in the trade", yes I hate that fking site with a passion. No, we do not have bad reviews but we have friends who have been affected by it.

Pretty much this. Trip Advisor lets people with minor gripes air them in public rather than dealing with the issue directly.

OP, do the guy a favour... he's been reasonable by reaching out to you, give him the opportunity to "right" the "wrongs" you have experienced. It clearly means a lot to the guy and he wants to impress you.

I'd go with this - give him another shot, and if it's the same, review again.

Because there's no jeopardy for the liars and plonkers who are delighting in playing Polizzi with people's livelihoods.

You don't even need to have been there.

My wife complained about a stay in the Hilton we had. Manager contacted her and gave us a free night in a suite and the review stayed :-)
