Hi, I'm off to spain in a few weeks to visit the in-laws. My father in-law blew the turbo in his C5 just over a year ago, so he took it to a garage who charged him €3000 to fit a new turbo. In doing this they dropped parts of the old turbo into the engine and bolted it all back up. Didnt start so they tried charging him to diagnose and repair it. He told them to get lost, paid the €3000 and towed the car home. It's been sitting on his drive ever since.

Anyway, I said i'd have a look at it and see if i could do anything. Hopefully if they haven't tried to turn it over too much i'd expect i just remove the debris from the cylinders, and bolt the head back on (In theory), However any ideas of what i can expect so i can start gathering up the parts?

Things i can think of... Pistons smashed to hell, Cylinder walls scored, Head bashed to hell, Crank shaft could be bent. and the rest...?

Potentially on the shopping list..
gasket set
head bolts
head
block
crank shaft

If i need to replace the block i'll get another engine from the scrappy.

I don't want to have to be trying to find parts in spain, as my spanish leaves alot to be desired! Atleast here i know where to get the things i need.

I wonder what airport security will be like...whats this?? erm...a crankshaft :/ lol, i'll ship them before i go i think.

Any help is appreciated, Thanks!

dropping bits of the old turbo into the engine is rather vague, and TBH unlikely.

Exactly what do you mean by wont start ?

Hi, I've not seen the car yet so cant be much more particular, I've been told via my missus who has no knowledge of cars, and who is trying to translate what her dad told her...I wont know till i go.

It wont turn over even when battery is full, so i'm presuming theres something stuck in a cylinder? And yes you would have to be a complete dhead to leave a peice that big in the cylinder, and call yourself a mechanic! but apparently this is the case. Do you think maybe he's forgot to put a gasket on and something is fouling?

what was the turbo failure? just smoking or did it explode with bits going into the engine at the point of destruction? was the car running when it went into the garage? smile

How do you expect something that big to have gotten into the engine? It's got to get through the valve!

Again, wont turn over means many things.

Is the engine unable to turn over, or it simply doesnt turn when you turn the key. Two very different things.

If the engine is scrap...is the car even worth fixing ?

Guy who was mapping my car, had an mr2 in as the turbo was noisy. Found a spanner in the airbox and a lot of bent vanes on the turbo.
