Dominican Republic
Discussion
I'm off in a week to the Dominican Republic can't wait.
Can anyone help me with the tipping culture that have there?
I hear that looking after the people on the first day will get you good service for the duration of the holiday also tip the people that tidy and service the room.
Also do they prefer dollars or paso's?
Has anyone been and what advice can you give me
Cheers
Steve

It's a long time since we were there (18 years) but at the time american dollars was the preferred
currency.
we went all inclusive, which seems to be the norm for most of the resorts, and while on the resort tipping was generally discouraged, so most people would instead get food and drinks for the staff who where very friendly and helpful.
You will probably get hounded at the airport by locals wanting to carry your luggage to the transfer coach / taxi etc in exchange for money, and they can be very pushy,
You should probably give them a stern no thanks, but if you do let them help, try to make sure you've got some small change available or you may get caught out like us with nothing smaller than a $10.00 note to give them.

The baggage people at the airport are annoying.
My wife was like 'oh they're volunteers' and it cost me $10 as they wouldn't give me the bags back.
We didn't tip once, we stayed AI and it was ace.
Lots of sellers on the beach who also get annoying.
We loved the place, but had a better hotel experience in Cyprus this year...... Who'd believe it?

The bar man is definitely the one to tip well. I'd do it a couple of times though rather than just on the first night.
We also tipped the waiting staff that were really friendly and chatted to us but not as much as the bar man.
I'd also recommend a monster truck safari if that's what inland safari is.
ETA:
Don't let anyone carry your bags at the airport, your wallet will be lighter. Although you may have to tip the guy that carries your luggage to your hotel room.
