Anyone been?

I'm looking for somewhere nice for me and her for next May for about 2 weeks. In the past we've been to Captiva Island and Anna Maria Island and loved both and Florida generally, but would like to base ourselves somewhere new.

Usually we rent a house over hotels etc.

Any pointers?

Don't know if you've been to Islamorada - but the wife and I spent 5 days at the Cheecha Lodge & Spa on our tour of Florida last September, and really enjoyed it.

Nice private beach, great food, nice bar and easy to reach the other Keys.

Unless you like scuba diving or fishing the Keys are a bit 'meh'. Key Largo is Covent Garden/Camden Market By-The-Sea

The drive is fab done it many times. Always stay key west, there is the posh side and not so!!!! Southermost hotel is great, if a little pricey ,ie 350 a night for beach room. The trouble is there are so many great places to eat, add a couple of hundred a day, if you like a glass of wine ! Of course not each.

We drove down to Key West from Miami last year. The drive was about 3 hours each way and was intersting for only the first hour, then became a bit of a chore, particulely as it is single carriage way road and had quite a bit of traffic.

Key West was interesting and a bit of a party town with many bars and restaurants on the main street, but a couple of nights was more than enough for us. If we stayed any longer we would have got bored.

The overall impression of the keys was a bit "meh" as others have said above, and we don't plan on returning, although it was an experience that we wanted to do and cross off the list.

Slightly misleading from a geographical perspective.

Our place is on Longboat Club Road which is firmly on Longboat Key? Do you mean because it's towards the end?

I'm guessing the OP is enquiring about the archipelago that extends from South Miami to the Dry Tortugas, rather than a barrier island near Sarasota - pleasant, as it is.

It's a 'Key' and I love it. So I recommended it.

Been out the other way a number of times and much prefer LBK.

I get it - and so is this:

...but probably not what the OP was asking about.

I went there with my partner in February, we had 5 nights in the Keys and then 2 in Miami. As others have said there's a big focus on watersports and fishing, neither of which my partner or I do or did but still had a great time!! The drive down to the bottom is fun, helped that the weather was good but awesome scenery and some nice places to have breakfast with a view of the Gulf/Atlantic depending on which side. The further down you go the nicer it seemed to get. Agree that Key Largo is not great, we stopped there on night 1 after flying into Miami in order to break the drive up a bit.

Key West is an interesting place to spend 2 nights, some nice places to eat as well as some unusual attractions (street performers in Duval Square at the sunset, Southernmost Point, Butterfly Reserve, etc) Very laid back, not a massive place so felt 2 nights was enough. Then we went halfway back up and stayed near Marathon at the Hawk's Cay resort, mainly due to the fantastic Dolphin experience there but also a lovely resort in itself.

We are both mid 20s and like to see and do a fair bit on holidays so 5 days there just right for us before staying in Miami (complete opposite), however if you are into taking things slower and lounging around more then you may be able to sustain 2 weeks.

Hope this helps.
