When did these arrive in UK? Saw one for the first time this morning although I know they've been on sale in North America for a while.

Massively cheaper than the Toyota/Subaru pairing with prices from £18,000.

Any good?

Not really in the same market as the GT86. More a competitor for the Scirocco/RCZ I'd have thought.

Correct. I think they look alot more interesting than the VW.

This is not in the same class, the Velostar should be compaired to a hot hatch and I'm not sure if its a 'hot' one as when I looked at one it ressembles a hatch back more than the other options reffered to.

Something about the 2 different sides just seems wrong...should be either a 5 or 3 door. Not something inbetween depending on what side you look at

Hyundai seem to have some pretty acceptable cars on sale right know. No wonder they're gaining market share around the world.

Went to view one a couple of months ago, it they'd made it symmetrical and 5 doors I'd be driving around in it now.

Indeed. Hyundai already do a car in a similar segment as the GT86, but seem to refuse to want to export them the UK.

Makes the Veloster look a bit crap in comparison if you want to derive some sort of pleasure from driving.

You still can't get the badge snobs in this country to not scoff at Lexus/Lexui after 20 years of successfully (in the terms of quality cars they have produced) taking it to the established German brands. How do you think a luxury Hyundai would go down?

This is true, as good as it sounds (5.0 429 BHP V8, RWD and a lovely looking 4 seat interior) it will only depreciate the same as an LS430.

Still a new M5 is 70 grand and that is 40. Go figure.

Hyundai should have sent over the Genesis coupe to replace the old coupe. The Veloster is just not the same kind of car.

Looks like it is arguably more of a 7 series rival and given the expected £1/$1 ratio on new cars they'd get it here for £60,000 with very few options to choose. A base model 740i SE is £62,000, over 100BHP down and that's before you had extras like parking sensors and wheels that don't look like they've been nicked off a Base model 1 series.

give it time. remember when samsung and lg first started selling tvs then jag bought out the xf. soon people will realise a car doesnt have to be german to be good. but for now... if i was considering a ford, renault vw or pigeot, then a hyundai would be highest on my list of cars to take a look at.

It amuses me how the cars most revered by the snobs are actually becoming less reliable and being built worse than ever. Diesel 4 cylinder BMW engine anyone?

Was at Hyundai this morning so had a closer look at this model.

Salesman said they had been out a year or so but not selling well, turbo version even less. I've certainly never seen on on the road.

My thoughts
Great that the manufacturer is trying something new
Great that there is a new turbo car on the market
Great that it's interesting and different
However
Those plastic bits on the bonnet are fookin stoopid
Can't see the point of the 3rd door
The exhaust pipe (1) bears no resemblance to the exterior exit
Too rounded/bloated at the front

I think it's hideously ugly, but that's only my opinion and plenty of people seem to like it. I'd also suggest that it's trying a bit too hard to be rather pointlessly different or present a faux-sporty image.

Having said that, apparently it's not bad to drive, if not as sporty or as swift as the looks suggest. But like all these Hyundai/Kia cars, they're a bit damned with faint praise it seems to me. They're always reported as being "surprisingly good" or "good for a Korean car" or "gives the established European/Japanese products a run for their money [but doesn't pip them to the post]". They have made a hell of a lot of progress over the past ten years but the main reason for purchasing a Kia or Hyundai remains, it seems to me, the price and the warranty.
