Thinking of getting a 330S. Have heard of ring failure on these cars and have asked to know if the vehicle has had the remap following the recall and used Shell VPower or equivalent petrol. Is this failure something that is likely to happen, it is merely a question of time? If the cars is a 59 plate for example, but around 30,000 miles I assume it isn't covered by warranty anymore.
Is there anything I should be asking, worrying about ... or is this a case of don't go there!

Ringland failure will happen but it's hard to know when. Some go in the first few thousand miles and others under 50k. It won't be covered under warranty unless you're very lucky and can prove you have the oil topped up before every journey.

Personally I would avoid all 2.5 engines unless they've been rebuilt with stronger pistons.

330S has the Prodrive map on the ECU - only the standard STis should have the software update to prevent ringland failure.

The mapping on these cars is set to run very lean which doesn't help with reliability and contributes to failure. Even with a map update running them richer won't help, the problem is inherently with the hardware.

Subaru know this but won't admit it and if it fails during warranty they'll do what they can to wriggle out of it as will any manufacturer.

If you buy your car from a dealer you'd get a year warranty on it anyway so presumably if it fails in that year you'll be covered. Best thing to do is ask the question before purchase. If ringland/piston/bearing failure occurs will the warranty cover it and if it does will they try and wriggle out of their legal obligation to repair it?

IMHO i think a private purchase is fine if it's had a rebuild otherwise buy from a dealer if it hasn't but play hardball and ask pertinent questions.

A map will not and does not prevent failure. 330S have dropped just as readily as standard STIs.

I'm not disagreeing with you on that one at all - just some more information for the OP.
