not having a dig but the same argument can be put forward for people who bought new cars. I saw my tax double in 2 years, and as for the 1.6 only costing 200 to tax, that only goes for economical diesels, a 1.6 astra has 167g of co2, costing 570 a year.

And a 2L turbo petrol these days costs about 1200 to tax, up from 710. Given that this is pistonheads, I think the old way favours most people here.

Road tax is the worst tax ever... Ireland have less roads to use than UK but road tax is bigger, quality of roads is worse than quality in western Europe and there is no tax... What is money from tax going for :?: Pay for using the roads :?: You buils those roads for public money. If i pay road tax for using the roads why do i have to pay for toll bridge or some toll on N4 or N3 (double charge for the same thing)... If i have two cars why do i have to pay for two cars ? I'm not using two cars at the same time - do it like other country have - pay only for car with bigger engine and use whichever car you want...

And the last one... is it legal to forcing me to pay for something i didn't use ? for example.. i'm going for holidays for 2 weeks and my car will be parked on non-public underground car park what mean that i will not use roads - why do i have to pay for this ?

Road tax should be included in petrol price - do 50c more per litre and then if you have bigger engine and you do more kilometers you will use more petrol and you will pay more included tax but if you will not use your car, you will not use petro; and you will not pay for it - it's the most honest way to do.

Trucks pay smaller tax than i pay for my private car but they produce more co2 and they are heavier than my little coupe and they damage roads more than me.

I'm paying nearly 1300e per year for road tax. Should i feel more important than someone who pay 200e. Pay more - use more, so next time when i will stuck in traffic i will use "bus lana" because i pay enough to use all the road smile

I think the problem with the roadtax is that it IS. I'm 99.9% sure that roadtax is not legal - someone who know the law should check this with EU law smile

Sorry for my english biggrin

For a start it's not road tax, it's motor tax. therefore it's on the vehicle, not the user of the road. If trucks were to have to pay loads of tax, I'm pretty sure you'd notice the difference in proce in everything you buy, that's why we have commercial insurance.

The classic car is the way around this! €48 euro a year is nice and cheap.

This is the problem, you only get the cheaper tax on vehicles over 30 years old[vintage].How many classic cars are there that you have to pay huge tax for, this is what needs to be changed.Lots of 80s and 90s cars are now very collectable .Alfas, cosworths, golf vr6,etc etc. Looked at a 80s jag for sale the other day 1000 euros but over 1800 euros to tax nuts unreal. There is classic insurance but there needs to be a reduced rate of motor tax.Only my opinion, but dont you think it would bring alot more exciting machinery to our roadsdriving

yeah, and sometimes I wish I had a giant industrial unit to save cars until their 30th birthdays.

But the original post is claiming that the new tax is unjust, not the old.

To bring a car into the state it has to be 30 years old ,to pay the 200 euros vrt.You also need proof when the vehicle was brought in ie a ferry ticket. Dont get caught out, buying a car not thirty years old ,you may be subject to huge vrt costs.By the way a tvr 350i is awesome, biggrin

Well there are a lot of great cars then coming into that bracket over the next few years e mail me if you want someone to find you the right car as like women you need to try a few first??? and this can be a pain back and forth.
I have recently sent a Porsche 911taga SC 78 which I had restored to Cork and will be on the Cannon Ball Run and am currently having a Taimar TVR built that will be going over early next year for the same person.
I am based in Kent and also London so can usually view a car fairly quick in these areas which usually you need to do fast for the best cars at any budget usually sell very fast.
