Surely they mothballed the thing because regs and standards require that as soon as you have any kind of damage to such an exploratory well you shut it down? It's operating to as near as damn it Safety Critical criteria I presume, risk class 1 etc given the potential hoohaa.

that's making a big stretch....

let's not forget it was an exploratory drilling in the first place...

I'm slightly surprised at the enthusiasm to fund fracking given current (and future) prices of energy. What is the break-even price on these projects in a country with a high population density and strict environmental standards?

Apparently, fracking technology is advancing at breakneck pace. Costs are falling steeply.

For now.... As the saying goes prices (and availability) can go up as well as down.
Only the short sighted base what they do on just what conditions are in place now.

For the US right now, the two are directly connected. The cheaper fracking puts more oil on the market, even at these prices.

The thing about fracking is that it is relatively quick, easy and cheap to start a well so production is quick to respond to market changes.

Well you must read the papers.... you know like

Exxon Valdez...
Deepwater Horizon....
Torrey Canyon....
tapwater catching fire....
pollution..
more oil spills...
seabirds coated in oil...

I could go on, it's just big bad oil, profiteering on the back of the poor fluffy bunnies.....

More bullst, only 'chemicals' used in the UK are:

Polyacrylamide (friction reducer )
Sodium salt (for tracing fracturing fluid)
Hydrochloric acid (diluted with water)
Glutaraldehyde biocide (used to cleanse water and remove bacteria)

if done badly, then yes, it can bring forward the onset of earthquakes.

The government task force on fracking reported back last month and reported that UK fracking would result in a net reduction in emissions and that it would be a good idea all round. No doubt this has been ignored or dismissed by the loons as government shills doing what they're told.

Looks like confirmation that central government will take ministerial control over the planning decision at little plumpton and roseacre...

Disappointing but expected from this bunch.
