Type R handling

Ok, please list 5 tips on how handling can be improved on a GC8 type R

1. Anti lift kit ( to reduce lift off oversteer)
2. Bump steer geometry mod (to flatten the steering geometry)
3 bigger rear roll bar (to reduce standard under steer tendencies)
4. Replace any worn bushes
5. Prodrive geometry settings.


Also.

6. Adjustable shocks to move more weight to the front.
7. Leave the DCCD dif open. The front still pulls you out of a slide with 33% of power.

First and foremost make sure everything is in good condition. The type r is a pretty decent handling car out the box so check you have no worn bushes or knackered droplinks etc.

Then good tyres and geometry set up. After that you can look at upgrading bits. Uprated adjustable antiroll bars work well. I prefer doing both as i don't like the feel of only uprating the rear but thats a personal thing. The v5/6 type r shocks are very good so if your on a budget using them with uprated springs works well.

Then your looking at coilovers, under braces etc. but these all make it more uncomfortable on the road.

obviously if you change shock and springs etc get the geo redone.

Is there anything you are particularly having trouble with or any aspect of handling you want improving? Are you getting understeer/oversteer? Bouncy skittish ride?

Will the car be used on road or track?

What power, tyres & brakes?

STi or a V-Ltd (no DCCD?)

As said, the Type R handles very well, and it's lightweight makes for a very nimble and fast direction changer. For me it is the most fun of all the Impreza's I've owned, and has been honed for road use... Bilstein dampers with P1 springs, 22/24 arb's, plus other Whiteline goodies

Joking apart, Hols recommendations are spot on apart from 1. LOO can actually be a very positive trait. However, the one thing you need to do is state what the issue is you have, as the typically trendy mods that the forums often recommend do not make for a better handling car, they make for a different handling car, and the characteristics you create might not suit you or where you drive. BE WARNED - it depresses me when I see someone post that they want to fit a set of coil-overs but only have a budget of a few hundred quid. The reason they typically give is that they want a better handling car. The actually reason is 'Because Race Car'. You then get a post a year or so later asking how they can stop their car skipping over the bumps mid-bend.

Fiddling with Geo / etc is a very very fine art so do it carefully and with understanding.

(2) This will enable you to ask more specific questions about what you want to change.
(3)-(5) Repeat (1) and (2) as desired.

Agree with the 2nd post.

I've just fitted Whiteline ARB's and drop links along with the anti-lift kit and roll centre adjustment kit. Geo setup by somebody who knows what he's doing and the difference is incredible.
