Horse flies

Our garden is infested with them at the minute. You can't go 10 minutes in the garden without one of them attempting to land on you and attack. I must have killed over twenty last weekend alone.

I found the best method of killing them is to let them land on you then smack them quickly then stand on them. Anyone got any better methods of killing or keeping them away? I've tried insect repellent but it had no effect.
