Hi,
I was hoping someone could help me. I have just recently bought my first car (renault clio) and it came with alloy wheels already fitted but the cheapest insurance company told me that it has to factory fitted alloys which i DONT have, so i was wondering could i put the 182 standard alloys on from the renault clio sport or would that still count towards being modified alloys or would i have to buy the horrible standard ones for my renault clio for them to insure me? PLEASE HELP

thanks smile

Either run the quote again but TELL the insurance company you have modified alloys, or buy a set of standard alloys that would have been on the car when first sold.

Good luck

ETA - the 182 alloys would still count as modified, unless your car is the 182 version.

Not my experience. AF wanted to known the qualification of the person who fitted my exhaust! They were also 50% more expensive than The high street. There are a few other reasons I wouldn't use them, but name and shame rules mean I can't frown

Might be different now though.

I'm with Greenlight. I find them quite good. But if is your 1st car and no NCB then you may not qualify to their quotation criteria. There's also Sky insurance and Brentacre just to name a few.

If the only mod is the alloys then it shouldn't be a biggie I'd imagine to insure but then I don't go through all the comparison sites.

If the car is declared as being standard, that's what it needs to be. If you insured a Focus 1.6 with focus RS wheels, you wouldn't consider that standard, surely?

As said, either find an amenable insurance company, or get some stock wheels. I'm sure selling off the ones you have will pay for a set smile

As others have said, if it's not a 172, then they would still be a modification - it must be possible to find someone who wants to swap a set of standard Clio wheels for an after market set?

Thanks for your help guys, iv been on every comparison site and put a quote with modified alloys and its just ridiculous price's coming up like £5000 but with standard alloys Its £1900! Not sure why insurance goes up that high for some alloys! But I'm just going to sell off my set and buy some of the standard alloys. Could anyone recommend sites or for some or is ebay or gumtree my best place to look?
Thanks again for your help smile

~For standard Clio wheels, wouldn't a scrappy be the best place to find some? There must be hundreds of them about.

Just make sure they are the right style/shape for the spec of the car.

Hold on a second, get the three best online quotes then ring them up and go thru the quote, when it gets to the "does the vehicle have any modifications?" tell them that your wheels are a bit corroded and that air is slowly leaking out and you were planning on putting different wheels on, see what they say.

When looking for a bike quote online I declared the mods and price more than doubled, I called the company, mentioned the mods and he added them on for no increase.
Always phone insurance companies.

I'd agree with that. Op, get on the blower!

Also agree.

The insurance company will probably be looking at it from a cost implication, if you have put 2 grands worth of alloys on your car and crash they will need to replace them. if they know they are a similar cost and readily available for your car should it need repair they probably won't be bothered.

The key thing is you have declared it (as you seem to realise anyway), if not your insurance could be voided.

We need to remember these companies are in the main run by bean counters (apologies to insurance personnel if tarred by brush in error)

The cheapest quote I got was 1900 on ingenie witch is a insurance that fit a black box in to monitor my driving, one of my mates got his black box fitted a few weeks ago and told me the guy was talking to him about that once he went to someone's house to install the box into there car and he refused to fit it because the car did not have standard alloys fitted. So I am unsure that they would let me have non standard alloys at all!

So what are we talking - Carlos Fandango, extra wide wheels or sensible similar alloys?

They might not but on the phone you can explain that they are not increasing the value of the car and that if car was stolen you would not be wanting them to pay up for replacement alloys.
Tell them it is a replacement as your wheels are in terrible condition and you can get the alloys cheaper than a set of Renault wheels, no harm in asking.

Also, fair play to you for being honest, most teenagers would insure the car as standard and bang on aftermarket alloys anyway.

There 17" alloys not sure what make or anything, there not close to the standard ones at all, I'm going to ring up later on today no harm in trying, I wouldn't want the risk of the insurance company not paying out just because I didn't have standard alloys. As I said ill ring up later on and see what they say

Out of interest, there must be thousands of cars sold on the used market every year that will have had some form of modification done to them. When your average Joe Bloggs comes to insure their new purchase, how are they to know what is standard and what isn't?

Some mods are obvious but others are certainly not. For example, If Mr Bloggs bought a car that had been re-mapped by a previous owner, how would he know that it's been modified unless he'd compared other models of the same factory spec? Now I know it's wise to test drive more than one car but in reality how many people actually do this and how many people would know what to look for?

Where would Mr Bloggs stand if he had to claim for his car that he'd insured to the best of his knowledge as standard, but which was later found to have been modified?

Then Mr bloggs would get fined as the insurance company can't fit the black box in his car because it is modified and would of wasted there time.
