Security for most high end cars defeated!

Seems like a few academics have cracked the Megamos cryptography that's used on most high end cars, the UK courts have banned them from giving a presentation in America about the weakness but seeing that some of the academics are Dutch I don't see how this will be enforced?

I'm all for freedom of information but I'm not sure if releasing the code is in the public's best interests? The fact that its now already been done will mean that other less ethical hackers will crack it soon as well which will mean millions will now have to revert to steering locks and other physical deterrents.

Maybe it is in the public's interest to force the manufacturer's hand in improving the security of the vehicles.

It's a bit melodramatic to suggest that "millions of cars will be stolen"
