Hi all,

So in 5 years driving I've only owned 4 BMW's

e36 318i
e46 318i (Baaaad decision!)
e46 330d
e36 328i

Im with the 328i and I absolutley love it and care for it dearly.

I will be putting my 328i up in classifieds soon as Im going away.
I am thinking about an e36 m3 and looking after it well as I do all my cars.
I just love the chassis of the E36

The thing is I have had such a narrow variety, what am I missing out on?
What else could I look at, around 5-6k ish or less,
Good to work on and quick ish. (quicker than a 328)
RWD preferable

thanks!

I like BMWs. I just bought an E36. It's a nice place to sit, it makes a nice noise and I like the way it looks. There is nothing remarkable about the way it drives. I love it, but for your £6k I'd be looking at every other RWD car in the PH classifieds as well.

Maybe you'll like 350Zs, maybe you'll be one of those weirdos who has an orgasm from having no roof and you'll love an MX5, maybe the thrill of waiting for the engine to go pop will entice you in to an RX7 (or 3 RX8s for that much), maybe a ropy S1 Elise will be such an amazing experience that you can't ever imagine selling it. You might even enjoy something FWD like an ITR.

Although I've been looking at E36 M3s to replace my 323 with. That or a 944.

Something from Merc or Lexus if you want to stay in the saloon/barge market.

Or something sporty and light(er) if you want a change.

I've had 4 e36 bmw's from a 318is to a 328, and one e30 325. I love the e36, especially the 328, mine was very cheap and not the best but was very good mechanically. The best thing was the LSD, made it so much more fun!

I think at the sort of money your spending and the fact that you want rwd a e36 m3 would be hard to beat. I haven't driven one so can't comment there but they look awesome to me and I'd absolutely love one!

Just for suggestions, maybe a tidy 200sx if you can find one or Porsche 944?

thanks for the suggestions, I do realise If I hang on for a bit for finances to improve,
it opens up a lot more, such as the elise, or a chim.

Im not a huge vert fan but I wouldnt mind no roof so long as there is something good to listen to.

You do see 'E36' as the answer to a lot of what car threads so I suppose they are unique in their requirements and hard to bear sometimes.

Looked at CL500 mercs but they're all Auto from what I can see unfortunatley.

I've actually got one in the garage ready to fit to the 328, havent got around to it yet, very worthwhile I take it?

Do you think it'd improve the dire resale cost considering how much I've spent on it haha

This is the obvious non-BMW suggestion, given the OP's budget and need for RWD.

Not many drawbacks apart from the thirst and the lack of a rear seat.

Would £6k get you into a Porsche 968, or are they not that cheap yet?

The thrill of the Turbo's far outweighs the fear of a rebuild though! wink

I've had 2 RX7s. I still have a perfectly functional 13B engine in my garage because it outlasted the chassis.

Not good ones though. All the ones I saw for less than £7500 were a bit ropey or mega mileage . .

Get an E36 M3, shouldn't lose much in value either

I fitted mine last weekend on a buddy's driveway.

1) It's a bh. Bolts are easy, general weight and awkwardness of fitting is not!
2) Make sure you use decent oil- I used Castrol LSD synthetic oil, 75w140 rings a bell. No grinds or upset noises.
3) Definitely worth it. Just remember to take the ASC out of the equation (buy a 325i elbow joint, junk the ASC throttle body under the bonnet, button blank to replace the switch, remove bulb from clocks).

You'll never get your money back. I've literally emptied my wallet into my car, and it's probably improved the resale value by 5p. However, for the feelgood factor and the sheer enjoyment, it's worth it... and I'll do the unthinkable & break her when the time finally comes.

Nothing wrong with sticking to a car you know, understand and enjoy.

I'd say its defintely worth it. Mine drove alot better than the ones i had with open diff's and also alot more fun in the wet!

Haha not sure about increasing the value but it might make it easier to sell. Most people who contacted me when i was selling mine asked if it had a LSD so i re-listed it with LSD in the title and it sold very quickly. A group of lads from Wales bought it as a cheap car to take drifting, wish i'd of done that!
