So I moved to the sticks and there's not exactly a surplus of petrol stations out there. I used to use Shell all the time and had no trouble.

Now my only two local ones are:

1. a brand new Sainsburys, offering ordinary and 'premium' (97 I think)
2. a somewhat dilapidated Esso

My car's an early direct injection engine and by all accounts doesn't get on well with supermarket fuel - carbon buildup, clogged injectors, etc. The supermarket fuel rumour might be urban myth, but I can believe it, and it puts me off Sainsburys 95, though not necessarily their 97 which might be better.

I'd favour the Esso but on filling up this morning I noticed they had printed signs on the pumps telling everyone to ignore any claims about 'advanced fuels' as they didn't apply to what they serve at this station. I've not seen it before so perhaps it's temporary.

Any idea why? Why would they have fuel with presumably less additive at certain stations?

What would you go for?
