What do Ultegra callipers give over lesser specification models apart from a little weight saving?

The new ones are meant to be outstanding performance(according to magazine reviews)I've got them on mine and they are lovely to use, have great feel and stop the bike very well. That said, I had no model number shimanos on my previous bike. They didn't feel anything like the ultegras and I had to pull harder to slow the bike down but they still worked.

Surely the pads are the big difference in stopping power?

The Ultegras are dual pivot now rather than a single pivot. I think it means you get get more bite for less lever pull and it's a more linear pull ratio. I'm not sure about the pads other than the feel of the whole braking system is just nicer.

They also seem to be able to reduce your speed in the wet, an achievement that is still beyond the majority of rim brakes.

I've got Ultegra 6800 brakes on the Serotta, alloy rims (Ambrosio Nemesis) and they are indeed great brakes, wet or dry.

At RRP the difference between a pair of 105 and Ultegra is £35 which probably isn't worth the extra.

But currently it's only a fiver. The discounted ones on Wiggle are 6700 and they're obviously selling off old stock as the current ones are 6800.

In fact I've persuaded myself and bought a pair.

I'm tempted too but my wife will kill me. Or buy a handbag.

My wife has no idea whether my brakes say Ultegra or Flange.

And if she finds the packet then "You want me to be safe, don't you dear?"

I cannot recommend Ultegra brakes highly enough.

My Merida road bike was fitted with a full 6700 groupset, and the braking improvement over the early 90s no-brand single pivot brakes fitted to the Falcon 'racer' it replaced was incredible.

I bought a set of Swisstop pads to fit with the intention of further improving the performance*, but over 5,000 miles later, they are still in the packet. The OE Shimano pads were still going strong when I was hit by a SMIDSY van driver at a roundabout in February. Sadly, the bike is no more, but the groupset may survive to adorn another frame.

*improved braking power is necessary as I spend most of my spare time cheating my way to KOMs on 'meaningless' downhill Strava segmentstongue out

Do they offer it with a 39/52 (or 53) , I like them but don't want a 34/50
