Hello Peeps, i'm on the lookout for a new w/end toy. Have been looking at various different marques over the last several months but cannot decide on what to get.
I have owned 3 EVO's in the past, a IV, VI and a VII so here's my immediate dilemma, one of my best mate's had just surprisingly given me first dibs on his totally mint Obsidian Black 07' plate STI with a genuine 14k on the clock, nice quality exhaust and a little remap circa 340bhp and some very nice subtle touches, the car is like bloody brand newbiggrin.
I have heard the different opinions about the 2.5 being a weaker engine than the 2.0 etc. but if I bought this car I wouldn't be looking for any massive power upgrade or the like.
I have always liked Scoobies but been an EVO man at heart, just interested what you experienced folk thinksmile...

The rods/pistonheads do have something of a cadbury's reputation.

Awesome engine though.

I have no first hand experience but from speaking to owners it seems some can go at super low miles and some will never go. It does appear to be a 'when' not 'if' thing though in the main, especially with tuning.

Forged seems to be the way to go.

My engine is currently being rebuilt after the oil pickup pipe fractured. Not impressed with it really.

Great cars until the pistons go end of life. I had one up to 50k with no issues but I wouldn't have another 2.5. I'm now in a 2.0 STI and I prefer it. Find a rebuilt forged one and it'll be the perfect Impreza.

Forging them isn't that expensive...and it opens the door for a lot of care-free modifying!

The 2.5 has excellent off-boost response and a very low boost threshold, it's an awesome motor.

2005 STi has the 2.0ltr engine but benefits from the wider track and DCCD... It's a stronger engine and revs harder and faster... For a weekend toy it's more fun, however, I do see the appeal of the 2.5 for daily duties...

^^^^^^^^^^What he said^^^^^^^^^

If you like the 2.5 get a WRX and a wagon at that makes a lot of sense as a daily driver, minor mods and a remap will make it good fun.

2.0 Sti for more serious fun with similar mods and remap.

Just depends on what floats your boat smile

To put it into perspective taking reliability, supply and demand etc. price speaks volumes

A UK 2.5ltr hawk Sti you could get as low as £7/8k
A JDM 2.0ltr Hawk Sti you could pay up to £16k

IMHO
