Stand by to bend over, chaps, here it comes... the first serious attempt by a UK mainstream political party to end the car era.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/liberalde...

In a nutshell...

"Nick Clegg’s party has unveiled proposals to only allow ultra-low carbon vehicles on UK roads by 2040.

"The controversial measures would mean millions of petrol and diesel cars being forbidden.

"Only electric vehicles and ultra-efficient hybrid cars would be allowed on UK roads under the Lib Dem plans.

"However, petrol and diesel vehicles would still be allowed for freight purposes.

"The plans will be voted on by members at the upcoming Lib Dem conference in Glasgow and could become party policy if approved."

Obviously the chances of an entirely Lib Dem government are highly remote, but if they continue to hold the balance of power in coalitions then this sort of thing could start to bleed over from the lunatic fringe to the mainstream of politics. Those of us who intend to operate petrol and diesel cars in the longer term may wish to start making contact with our MPs to ensure that our point of view is properly heard.

Not entirely on topic, but related; I've always wondered about the validity of cars as a long term investment, as surely at some point, more than likely sooner than we all like to think, the majority of them will be little more than relics or museum pieces.

No, we'll just crate them up and sell them outside the EU, e.g. to Americans who will run them on either petrol or compressed natural gas (shale), or to buyers in other countries. Quite possibly some to Africa which by 2040 will be undergoing the sort of economic transformation that China has over the last 20 years, and may well be producing decent third-generation biofuels in some quantity.

Presumably they'll have banned the sale of petrol and diesel to those who are not registered freight operators, so better stock up with AVGAS (it doesn't go off like car fuel).

Interesting - good points there.

Well, there's your first problem. Although referring to almost 25% of the public as "the lunatic fringe" is a bit misguided, current predictions are that they're going to get slaughtered in the next election. They're absolutely not going to be holding the balance of power for quite some time.

With one or two exceptions, Steve Webb fro example, they are without doubt the most stupid bunch that have sold every principle the held out to sit at the big table.

They will be lucky if they have any power at all after the coalition ends. We will still have a need for petrol cars in the future as there will still be no viable option by then to replace them, but other fuel will be used as well.

Why do parties waste time on fantasy wet dream policies that will never happen when there are more important things happening in the present?
And don't say to get votes, I can't believe anyone would say "yes, I will vote for the Lib Dems in 2015 because 25 years later when they're still in power they might ban combustion vehicles if nothing has changed since 2013"

It's more realistic that once electric really takes off, it will simply undercut combustion. They won't need to ban combustion if it starts to die out naturally, why lose out on the tax?

For the record, I haven't referred to Lib Dem voters as the lunatic fringe, only Lib Dem members, and there are currently only about 42,000 of them, so more like 0.07% of the public.
http://www.newstatesman.com/politics/2013/07/lib-d...

And to be fair to them (which I suppose I ought to) they have the opportunity to disprove that provisional assessment by soundly rejecting this obviously lunatic proposal at their forthcoming conference. So let's see...

What makes you think they won't then find new ways of taxing you to replace the fuel duty?
I am perhaps slightly cheating in saying that now, because I failed to point out earlier that the same Lib Dem policy document also calls for road pricing.

Are these the same aholes who suggested a few years back that all car tax should be £3000.

Roll on 2015 when they are consigned to the dustbin of history. Unless (God forbid) they rumble on by siding with Labour.

Wake me up when a UK mainstream political party arrive, after the next election the Liberals could hold their conferences in a phone box.

I can't help but think that it's a Max Clifford'esque publicity stunt to keep them in the minds of the general public as we are dragged nearer to an election, because most of us forget all about them and their impotence.
