Looking at a 120k Legacy 3.0Rn touring, and coming from a BMW 320D.
I am down grading to free some money.
Is this a good car, and is 120k getting on or do Subarus do the miles well?
Anything to add would be more than appreciated. I have heard the 2.5 can be problematic with head gaskets and cam belts. Am I right looking at the 3l?

2.5 NA engine does not have head gasket and cam belt probs, thats the EJ25 turbo unit not found in the legacy.

The 2.5 is however fairly gutless

the 3.0 engine is fantastic and well looked after should easily pass 200K

We have an Outback 3.0RN which is pretty much the same as the Legacy apart from higher suspension and some off road bits and pieces.

These are very reliable cars, but running costs are quite high.

Service intervals are close together and the service that requires tappets re-set every 60k miles is very expensive. Diff oil and gearbox oil changes are relatively frequent and also expensive.

Spark plugs are a pain to change as the engine has to be released from the mounts and jacked up to allow access to the inner two plugs.

The engine is lovely and smooth but needs plenty of revs to access the published power figures. Generally it is slower than my A6 Diesel which is a heavier car and has about 18bhp less.

Build quality is excellent especially doors etc. Speakers are woeful and are worth replacing, also for some inexplicable reason there is no courtesy light in the front of the car (irritating in the winter)

Overall though, we really like and really rate the Outback

Would you guys consider a 3.0 with 170k on the clock if fully maintained?
