quite happy to see this , however , when was the last time you actually saw a police car on the motorway?

Thank god for that. Driving along the M4 on Saturday and Tuesday was a complete and utter chore due to people not having the correct lane discipline.

This is nothing more that a load of hot air from the Department of Transport during the silly season to make it look as though they are doing something. First you have to define lane hogging, otherwise it won't stand up in court and then you have to find the extra BIBs to enforce it. I would also be happy to see phone users and tailgaiters targeted but that won't happen either due to lack of resources.

Or they could just allow people to overtake in any lane

It is a great idea, but as said before, not enough police on the motorways or any of the roads.

Does the fact that its been in the news (and the Mail) mean that law abiding citizens will conform? And thus no enforcement will be required....or at least there will be some impact without enforcement.

Obviously the habitual, mindless people who couldn't care less about their standard of driving or holding others up will continue as usual but this might make a percentage of people think, as it's now "illegal"

Just a thought.

My experience recently is that although they now know they will still not care and think that driving in the middle/outside lane is acceptable.

I even had a 'friend' link to this story on facebook to complain that MLM'ing wasn't illegal and that they would carry on doing it!

Alot of people view flashing of lights as a sign of aggression and so don't do it. I find once they move over a friendly wave can defuse the situation.

Often when I have passenger they arent 100% comfortable with the flash of the lights, I only do it after giving those in front a reasonable time to move over of show they are making some form of progress whilst overtaking.

The new laws would be great if there was any kind of enforcement. Sadly the police long ago seem to have abandoned any attempt to enforce the law on the roads, which results in widespread ignorant, aggressive, stupid driving.

Being in a car gives people anonymity and removes their inhibitions and so gives an insight into their true behaviour when freed of social constraints. It's not a flattering picture.

As everyone has said, pointless without enforcement. However, as I keep saying, this whole "new laws" story is merely a smokescreen to distract people from the almost doubling in the lowest speeding fine (an offence that doesn't require human enforcement). From the Mail article.

Mail said:
Endorsable (includes points) fixed penalty notices rising from £60 to £100 include:
Using a mobile phone while driving
Speeding
Motorway offences, eg reversing on the motorway and driving on the hard shoulder
Neglect of traffic directions, eg jumping a red light
Neglect of pedestrian rights, eg stopping on a controlled crossing
Load offences, eg causing danger of injury to the number of passengers
Motorcycle offences, eg carrying more than one passenger.

What should happen

Millions of drivers are in line for surprise £100 fines on Friday after hogging the middle motorway lane or tailgating in 'careless driving' offences

What will Happen

Nothing. There aren't any motorway police patrols to administer it.
