I was going to ask in the other Thailand thread but didn't want to hijak it...

We're planning on being in Koh Phangnan for New Years, and was wandering if anyone has any recommendations on places to stay? I realise that there's literally 100's of places on the island (and they'll be getting booked up well in advance at that time of year.....!), but thought I'd have an ask if anyone has any favorites / knows of any hidden gems that they can point me towards...!

I'm currently looking on sawadee.com and phangnan.info at the moment, any other good places I should be trying?

It depends on how much you want to spend, how close you want to be to haad rin nok (party beach), what amenities you expect etc. I have stayed in a range of different accomodation there and can really recommend http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g303907-... It's on haad rin nai beach which is a 10-15 min walk from all the action and still remains very quiet. Generally any accomodation on haad rin nai beach is good, quiet and a short walk from the fun.

I stayed at Coral Bungalows when i went there last. Its kind of a Party Hostel, but with large rooms and safe by all accounts (i don't remember much) a 10 min walk to the madness of the beach parties. Its also next to a tree house bar for the more relaxed evenings...

We stayed at Seetanu Bungalows last year. We had one of the 1 bedroom bungalows right on the beach, and it was lovely. A bit far away from the main party places, but the Pirates bar is only about 100yds away.

It's run by a Belgian couple, and they have a good selection of Belgian beers in the bar smile

As with all Thai islands.

Budget is what matters here. There is a huge range of places to stay on Phangnan. You can go from the cheap hostels in Haad Rin itself to the uber luxury hotels on the other side of the island.

I have done both.

Cheap: http://www.hostelbookers.com/hostels/thailand/koh-...

Expensive: http://www.kupuresorts.com/kohphangan/ (stayed here in February, it's fking epic)
http://phangan-rasananda.anantara.com/ (also fking epic)

My advise, if you are going there to party, don't be put off by not staying in Haad Rin, the island is incredibly easy to get around and its cheap too. I have even done a full moon party while staying on Samui and getting a boat across and back on the night.

Thanks for the suggestions guys!

Unfortunately VEA, the last couple of places are slightly out of my price range! They both look incredible though..... cloud9

Sarkmaster - I stayed at Seethanu when I was travelling in 2009! Checked them out this time, but unfortunately they're fully booked already! Word of the Belgian beers must have spread! Did you go to heaven bar next door? The Massaman curry was awesome when when we were there!

Cost wise, we're not after anything fancy, but ideally want bungalows, with air-con and a pool. Probably looking at spending up to £70 ish a night (for 2 of us). Not too bothered about being right 'in the action', as we want some time to chill out, and as pointed out it's pretty easy to get around the place.

I've seen this place on Sawadee, has anyone stayed there / know people who have...?

Si

Panviman resort - about six years ago was the islands only "upmarket" accommodation but probably many more places now. Worth a look though as very nice...and the did a motor boat shuttle to the Full Moon party!

Stayed here, was awesome, bit quiet, but would be a perfect chill place after the full moon party

Wow, the Panviman place looks really nice too! cool

I'm afraid we can't quite stretch to that over the Xmas / New Years period, as the prices triple! But it might well be worth a look if we fancy another few days somewhere a bit more chilled to recover before moving on.
