Painted handles.

The previous owner of the car had clearly had a lot of rings because the drivers door handle was pretty scratched-up and was in the titanium silver colour. I already had the piano black interior trim and I felt the inner handles could benefit from being black too.
This week, I was doing some bodywork repairs and painting to a metallic black BMW that had quite a subtle sparkle to it, so whilst I had the paint in the gun, I decided to repaint the inner handles to match.

I then discovered that the small leather trim was not even screwed to the inner handle and never had been. (There were no threads even in the handle casting) and the trim was just wedged between the handle and the panel. I tapped the fixings M4 and refitted the trims properly with countersunk M4 stainless screws and then refitted the handle with some nice gunmetal anodised M6 aluminium Allen screws.
All tight, no squeaks and the components match nicely.

What you a describing is normal. That piece of trim does not attach with screws, it has 2 holes at each end which fit over locating pins in the door handle, and then when the door handle is attached to the door panel, the trim piece is securely trapped in place.All tight, no squeaks and the components match nicely.

Hmm, may be normal, but the ETK shows it as screwed on. Don't know if you have the parts ETK but its shown here as........701441 Screw, M4 x 13, washer head x2

Yes, the bit behind the pull, which in my case is leather not Alcantara, not the armrest itself. Agreed it attaches over 2 pins, but why put another 2 holes in it to line up with 2 bosses in the door pull if nothing was supposed to go in there?
I suspect the design initiative got cancelled by the accounting dept.
Saves 2 screws, time tapping the threads and time screwing it on.
Designer would probably hang himself if he knew.

It depends on the boy's nationality to get a decent colour match.
If you cannot keep them from damage, then you need the paint shield on BEFORE you damage them, it will not cover the damage.

IF, you meant removing the old colour, any competant bodyshop will prep it in no time and then paint it. I used cable tye's to hold the lever in the open position so the paint get inside too.

I did that a few months ago. I was worried that having a black interior and adding more black would be a bad move. It actually compliments it very well but the gloss black shows up marks and dust very easily.

Keep a duster in the glovebox and join your local OCD society.

I have Venture shield on the outside from new so I'd do the same on the door pulls
It would also tie in well with the body coloured panel that comes down to the cuby hole inside the roadsters
