Porsche 904/6 Carrera GTS: Time For Tea?

Beautiful works 904 blows out the cobwebs before crossing the auctioneer's block

Somewhat overshadowed by the later glories of the 908s and 917s, the beautiful little Porsche 904 is one of those cars you think you know about but possibly don't.

If you think it looks good wait til you hear it
If you think it looks good wait til you hear it
Certainly the exhaustive catalogue entry detailing the history and provenance of this particular car for RM's forthcoming London sale is well worth a read if you need to educate yourself.

But first you'll probably want to watch the video. And hear it being put through its paces, the six-cylinder 911 engine in this car (hence the /6 designation) a much more serious proposition than the earlier flat-four the 904 started with. And if you ever wondered where the original 987 Cayman got its styling influence then look no further.

Meaning if you feel inspired by this but can't quite stretch to the seven-figure price tag you can swot up with our Cayman buyer's guide before taking the plunge into the classifieds. Perhaps an R would be the most appropriate tribute - if you can bear the colour this Official Porsche Centre offered manual offers a £10K saving over similar ones at other OPCs.

Saw one of these at the Silverstone Classic, apparently the owner paid €1,000,000 for it...

There's one of these porsches in the le mans museum. Beautiful car, always reminds me of the dino, which is no bad thing.

Always had a soft spot for these; good looking, makes a nice noise...it's just those wheels (period and purposeful maybe) that puts me off a little.

I really love those little and lightweight Porsche 904.

one day I hope to own one myself, no not a real one but a fine/good replica 904/6
with a around 300hp 3.6 in the back for the around 700kg light car makes it fly (well almost ;-))

this one looks also very nice>

I can assure you the sound hasn't been tweaked as I fixed the microphone into the engine bay during filming smile this car always sings and is fearsomely loud on the rolling road. Also the driver is bloody good and you won't find a better heel and toe downshifter.

We restored and ran all of the cars for sale in the 'laidlaw auction' over the last 8 years or so and we were drafted in by R&M auctions to dust them all off for a final play to produce the auction video. Happy bidding!

I just wondered if the sound had been overdubbed - lovely car. Nice filming as well

Every line on this car is just perfect. The noise is like music.

It's such a shame that modern cars can't be designed with this kind of freedom.

They certainly don't make them that small anymore.....

Fantastic car, with a great race pedigree.

If I had the cash, I would be on the phone to Martin & Walker immediately........

Edited- it's also only roadgoing Porsche to have a 0 as it's middle number, before Peugeot got all huffy about the 901

The chap in the UK who supplied my 550 Spyder kit also does a very nice turnkey 904 replica which he's produced for I guess 15-20 now http://www.904gts.co.uk
