I know a couple of people that I would consider to be highly intelligent who are serious followers of their teams, I know a few fairly well educated people with season tickets. Every single knuckle dragging moron that I know is a football mentalist though, Westham fans are normally the worst biggrin

Therefore IQ is not a barrier to enjoying football, but it is swamped by idiots who don't have two brain cells to rub together.

I think to be that fanatical about a team, to stalk them around the country no matter how poor they play, to blame a manager for players not trying, and all the other strange things football fans do I'd say they have a warped iq. I've never understood punching, spitting or bottling someone over a kids game, the Sunday league kids team parents are the worse.

There are lots of people in my industry with degrees, etc. the vast majority of them like football. A few also like cricket, and rugby. IQ has nothing, IMHO, with what sports you watch.

I would agree with this. Many many people with intelligence enjoy football, talk about football and write about football, and some fine sports journalists eg Henry Winter write marvellous pieces about the game. Let us also not forget that Albert Camus was also a goalkeeper.

The great writer and philosopher once said "Everything I know about morality and the obligations of men, I owe to football".

Different era, different game perhaps.

More recently, the fine Brazillian midfielder Socrates was a qualified doctor and I believe medicine became his profession after he retired from sport. Died young, a smoker, even while he was playing. He was a truly great playerfrown

Yes but standing in the rain for 3 days to watch cars go round in circles, then blaming the FIA when your team loses is clearly the behaviour of geniuses.

My brother and brother in law love football. Get them together and they talk about nothing else. They analyse every game, what went wrong, what went right and see parts of the game I never see. They are both very bright and have good jobs and nice wives.

Neither of them like the apes that are often associated with football, personally I don't think they (the apes) like football at all, they like the male bonding and camaraderie and football and the game could be anything.

On average, yes. I love football, but at rugby matches you can have a pint and sit with opposing fans. Football fans have to be kept sober and segregated because of the high retard quotient.

My nephew is very intelligent, taught himself Korean, makes considered comments on most subjects until you mention football then he turns into a total bell end.He supports a london team with a chicken as their crest and hates every other london team and most others. Will spout facts and names all day but has not a clue about the laws of the game as do most supporters.

I used to work with a couple of guys like this. Its all they would talk about, I think if you asked one of the guys what the other guy's wife name was he wouldn't have a clue. There are probably people like that in most hobbies/interests.

They must be stupid to pay them. If they all stopped going, and watching on TV, how long would it be before the clubs started to be financially crippled ?

What ridiculous prices? How much do you pay for Silverstone, Wimbledon, and so on. There is a huge range of pricing for season tickets, never mind single matches.

Not sure what any of that has to do with the OP.

Clubs make a substantial amount more from TV rights than they do from match day revenue. Still, call me an idiot for following something I hold dearest to my heart after friends and family.

I'm a season ticket holder at Upton Park. We have more than our fair share of idiots but they are all fiercely loyal to the club and they just appear to be idiots as they let the passion take them over during games. Still, I'd rather people think I'm an idiot for 90 mins on a Saturday than be sat at home choosing paint samples for the new extension with the missus [/sweeping generalisation of non football fans]

Edit - by substantially more income from tv, I meant per game as not every club has every game televised, so if people stayed away for a few that were televised it wouldn't make a great deal of difference. Poorly worded before as I'm a football fan...

Just because you got screwed at all those places too, doesn't make it 'good value'
