Hi

  • Scroll down to the actual question if you don't want to read about my dilemma.
I'm 21 with nothing but years of driving as a named driver (2.2 civic) and one small claim on top of it.

I'm looking for a new car and so far the only cars (I want) and I can insure on my own name are new BMW 118d m sport, Audi A1 or A3 with 1.6d s line. They are ~1400-1600 to insure on my own name.

After getting quotes for diesels I thought; well, let's see how much is it to insure hot hatch!
And here it is; Megane RS265 - 2.700 with excess of 3k! Same for Type R, new Focus ST or Golf GTI.
Exceptions; new Astra VXR. Total cost of insurance; 1.9k and 500 excess. No trackers involved.

One of the most powerful front-wheel drive car that is currently for sale is cheapest to insure. Why?

PS. Yes, I know the most reasonable thing to do would be buying something painfully slow (like 1.2s) but I would rather pay extra and have car that I actually enjoy to drive.

Maybe not as desirable, and therefore stolen less than the others?

Because at over 20k they are still out of reach of boy racers.

I bought a new VXR recently and the cheap insurance was something i noticed, coming in at less than £300 and less than half the price of my old 650i. Although, yes i am a bit older than you.

This. Insurance is all down to statistics. It's got purely "fast car = xx amount. Faster car = xx+yy amount".

Amount stolen / crashed / parts costs etc all come into it.

I'm glad I'm not a youngster nowadays though! At 20 I paid £1000 to insure a 290 bhp GT4 and I thought that was bad! I didn't even mind the 23mpg I was getting.

I don't think its because they are over 20k, plenty of kids will buy them on tick, especially with 0% finance deals that are out there every so often.

Its more likely that they haven't seen many claims on the model yet.

Try a second hand fast jag.
You may be suprised how fast you can go for your buck.
Other fast ones are n/a VX220 and Noble M12,both seem to be priced wrong by the Admiral Group.

I'll give it a go, thanks!

Thank you all for the answers.

Today I had a go in new 118d m sport and to be honest I really enjoyed all the toys it had. Cheap to run as well. The only thing that put me off was a shaking gear knob.

I was also considering new Fiesta ST (thanks to reviews) but it's just so many fiestas around! I mean they are everywhere!

Anyway, I'm going to vauxhall garage this afternoon and see what they've got.

Unfortunately for me, it's 2,5k with 3k excess. My father was telling me how much he used to pay to insure his car when he was at my age.. God, what a difference.

20 years ago i was 19 and bought a ford escort rs turbo. I paid £3k for the car and £1,250 to insure it third party fire and theft.

Insurance for young drivers on "performance" cars has always been expensive.

I"m an old fart at 39 now, and paying £250 for my 118d thats with 19 years no claims! Lol
