Conversations have started at home about next years holiday and they are all focused on largish resorts with kids clubs, and all of them look like they will cost a small fortune.

We do want something nice and memorable as it's our 10th wedding anniversary, but we also need something that is suitable for our (by then) 3 year old and 6 year old girls.

There is a decent budget...I'm just not convinced it would be best spent on a very expensive hotel / resort holiday, joined by hundreds of other people.

Dates are likely to be mid-July or mid-August 2014 and for 10 - 12 days.

Does anyone have any recommendations for something more interesting they've done recently?

Thanks all

glamping. Plenty of interesting campsites around Europe that either have tree houses, Yurts, or substantial cabins...nearly all situated in lush beautiful scenery...camp fires, wide open spaces..if the kids like nature and using their imagination...it could prove to be pretty good...plus if the budghet is healthy you get to indulge in some quality local produce, and maybe some good driving roads there and back...
coolcamping.co.uk is a good place to start.

Road trip in a motorhome - US (finishing off at disney) or Canada. We did a one month trip with a 3year old and 4 mth old across Canada a couple of years ago and it was fantastic.

Same thing, but Southern Europe.

Safari - Ulusuba is supposed to be good for kids

Multi stay in Far East, taking a beach holiday resort and a city stay to appease the need for beach - rayavadee springs to mind as a good one.

Or failing that, look up Atlantis Caribbean resort - looks survivable as a resort holiday.

Sailing - yacht charter (not bareboat unless you know what you're doing).

Villa holiday pretty much anywhere - they're much more relaxed than resorts and force you to get out and about with a hire car.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll look into those.

Not sure I'll get away with glamping but the other ideas might wash.

We always go to Morzine in the French Alps for summer. Lovely place, loads of activities for the kids. They do a deal in the area - €3 per day for a "premium multipass" which includes unlimited indoor and outdoor pool entry, ice skating, lift passes (for walking in the mountains), tennis, mini golf. You can also do horse riding, summer luge, mountain biking etc etc. There's loads to keep the kids happy. I even put my 5 year old into the local kids club for morning activities (although it's tailored more to locals than tourists).

Chalet rentals are pretty reasonable cost in the summer, since most money is made in the winter season.
