Things to do outside Washington DC
Discussion
Greetings chaps. I'm away to the US of A at the end of this month, and have the best part of two days to look around. I'm planning on spending day two in Washington DC, but thought it would be nice on day one to explore the area. I'm flying into Dulles and due to hotel prices, staying outside of DC - probably Chantilly or somewhere like that. I can hire a car for the day if necessary.
So, where around Northern Virginia or Southern Maryland is worth a look?
Ta muchly.

Gettysburg.
We drove from DC to NYC earlier this year and stopped off at Gettysburg. Absolutely brilliant. Site of one of America's great battles, Lincoln's gettysburg address etc. They have a museum which has authentic uniforms and weaponry, you'll also see a "cyclorama" which is a genuine 360 degree painting done over 100 years ago which has been restored and is actually really amazing to study in detail. It's a couple hours out of DC and worth doing.
If you're feeling adventurous,, bypass NYC and go up to Newburgh, NY and spend a few hours at Orange County Choppers.

Ooh. That's only 90 minutes from Dulles, perhaps I'll give that a go. Newburgh's a little too far for there and back in a day, but thanks for the idea!We drove from DC to NYC earlier this year and stopped off at Gettysburg. Absolutely brilliant. I'm half tempted to go to this, as it's right next to where I'm staying. Looks like a peculiarly American experience!

\Just to add, we spent 4 days in DC earlier this year, we pre-booked a tour of the Capitol building which was absolutely fascinating and gives you an idea of the history of how the US was founded and how DC itself has developed. Don't waste any time or money on the bus / duck tours. You can walk the route faster.
Also, get to Arlington. Tomb of the Unknowns is very moving and burial site of JFK and his family members is quite poignant and the view from JFK's gravesite is absolutely amazing. You'll also see the fields of tombstones which is moving to. I love DC, enjoy it.
