On the face of it it looks like an untenable situation. However the sponsorship deals run through 2022 so coke et al must keen paying. Blatter knows this so the old prick will hang on in there til they drag his ass to prison.

Those sponsors have deep pockets and good lawyers. They will find a way out if they want to.
The sponsorship was of the beautiful game not a corrupt cleptocracy.

Agreed.
I would have said the sponsorship was to make money and brand image is at stake.

Excellent news. Wasn't he due to go in Feb anyway? Nice bit of gardening leave.

Wouldn't have happened without the sponsors making the statements they made last week.

I'm sure the offiical statements we saw were one thing, I suspect FIFA were told something else by the sponsors, along the lines of "If he's not gone within two weeks, so will all the sponsorship money"

Would loved to have seen the Coke and Bud execs swearing a blue streak at the meeting.

Oh I'll bet they have, just in private meetings with FIFA though.

I thought they'd recommended he be suspended but he hasn't actually been suspended yet?

Confirmed. Blatter and Platini suspended from all football-related activities.

At last.

Tip of the iceberg though. There is an article on the Guardian which talks about the potential successors, they are all as bad as each other.

Wasn't the Saudi chap who threw his hat in the ring recently considered a white knight?

Indeed, I wasn't specifically talking about him as I don't know that much about him. However of the three candidates to replace Blatter (Platini, the Saudi guy and Chung Moon-jung I think his name is) only the Saudi is left as Chung has been banned for 6 years as well.

They are appointing Issa Hayatou as the temp replacement. This is the same person the IOC censured over bribery claims (he denied it) and who recently changed the rules in Africa so he can stay as president of their FA. The guy replaced Platini is under investigation by FIFA for failing to comply with the Garcia investigation into the WC bids.

You couldn't make it up.
