New Honda Civic Type R details

How to take the 'ring record from the Megane 265? More power of course!

Forget the McLaren P1, the latest Honda Civic Type R may soon be the car with the longest pre-production PR hype in all history. Still two years from production, Honda has chosen Frankfurt to tease us with a couple more tidbits of info.

You want subtle? Go buy a Golf GTI
You want subtle? Go buy a Golf GTI
What’s new? Well, the 2015 Type R has been confirmed with a 2.0-litre direct-injection turbo and 280hp but there's no confirmation of the gearbox yet. Furthermore, the recent Nurburgring testing produced a time ‘approaching the [FWD] lap record’, held of course currently by the Megane 265 at 8min 8sec.

The announcement of a power figures puts the Civic dead level with the Astra VXR and 15hp ahead of said Megane. But let’s not forget the 308 R in all this too, another five-door like the Civic with a 270hp 1.6 turbo and a proper LSD. Firm details on a potential Focus RS Mk 3 are still scarce, so it could become a three-way battle for the ‘ring record between the Honda, Peugeot and Renault. Don’t be surprised if the latter gets a mild mechanical upgrade in the near future...

As for the Honda, we’ll just have to keep hanging on for that next little drip from a very long and slow information stream.

That one is a 5 door. If they were going to make it a 3 Door you'd think the mule would be 3 Door too?

At least Honda are still making a high performance hatchback! They could have just not bothered...and sat staring at pictures of old b series vtec engines remembering the good old days.

A new breed of Type R beckons...just please don't make it paddleshift.

Now what will Mugen do to it?

Do those of you banging out the good ol' PH anti-paddle shift rhetoric actually have any experience with them?

I was previously a manual purist and avoided autos like the plague having driven a few bad slush boxes.

Then a knee injury pushed me towards an Auto Z4 Coupe with paddles.

Whilst my knees have now recovered, I won't be going back to a manual any time soon.

Full auto round town is so much more relaxing, whilst full manual on the paddles is more engaging and intuitive than any manual box I have driven on a good back road.

Best of both worlds.

Does a ZF or DCT (BMW) count?

Ive driven both plenty. I think they are both great boxes, the tranny feels tight into corners and the shifts are quick, I also dont have to think too hard when approacing corners at speed and needing to downshift. I wouldnt mind a decent auto, but id pick a manual so long as it was good.

Err...1 person said please don't make it a paddle shift. Slight overreaction there.

Still two years away? The competition will be a lot further ahead than it is now.

Question is, with a new facelifted Megane on the way in a few months, will RenaultSport go for a sub 8 minute lap just to try and steal some of Honda's thunder before they release anything?

Given than the 250 to 265 took about 9 seconds off the time, could a bit of weight loss and some additional power give Renault the push they need to do it?

That's what caught my eye as well, is there anything to back this up?!

This had better be good given the time it will take to appear. The current civic will be 3-4 years old by then.

But I guess they've had to really pull their socks up because the last type R wasn't all that great IMO (the bread van before it was better if more staid looking) and it had one of the worst ride qualities I have ever experienced. People who bought type R's on the 19 inch wheels must have been masochists. They've been forced to forego the rev happy NA engines and develop a new turbo petrol plant to keep pace with emissions and performance, that takes a lot of time!

Surely by 2015, the Civic will be well past its sell by date? IIRC the car is a heavily facelifted FN2.

I think they will keep the manual as the default, but I will not be surprised to see the offer of a DCT. I think a DCT will suit the car quite well.

The RS500 wasn't 4WD, fair to say that it's not necessary for the new RS to be 4WD.
