India suggestions

Off to India next month for a couple of weeks, starting in Mumbai, travelling to Delhi and culminating in the GP.

I have a vague plan to start with a few days on the coast somewhere near Mumbai then a few days seeing the city before travelling to Delhi.

In Delhi I want to see the Taj Mahal but other than that have done little / no research.

All suggestions and hotel recommendations most welcome

I had a thread on this fairly recently. I was there last month and got some good advice.

Not sure what specific advise to give other than do some research before you go! If you have any specific questions then just ask.

I went on an organised tour which was nice - took away any stress related to the organisation.

Will have to be quick as running to a meeting - but I visit Mumbai a fair bit.

I normally stay in the Renaissance (the hotel - not the convention centre which is attached) for the location (close to where I need to be), the pool, it's on the lake, and the rooms/service are superb.

If it's an extended stay, then the JW Marriot is also very good, on Juhu beach and close to the entertainment area. Great hotel and pool.

You'll get an awful lot of hotel for your money in Mumbai, so you can probably afford to push the boat out some..... Don't be put off by the description 'business hotel' - they're not mostly business-focused, it typically means 'high-end'. India can be a very strange place at times.

There was a series on BBC2 a few months called 'Welcome to India' - only 3 episodes, but one focused on Mumbai - worth watching - not on iPlayer, but probably on YouTube.

try to see the golden temple in Amritsar if you can ., it really is a special place ,

Any motoring related suggestions? For instance can you hire a Hindustani Ambassador to drive round in? Obviously going to the GP is motoring related!

I go to india every few years . if I go anywhere by car I make sure it is biggest most robust car available . such as a tata sumo . simply because there are a lot of accidents and I want to be in something substantial should an accident occur .
maybe I bam being a bit paranoid but once you see the crashed cars by the roadside and the general poor standard of driving you will probably agree with me.

The last time I drove in Mumbai, an elephant bent a front wing as it brushed past me in a traffic jam (there are only ever traffic jams in Mumbai).

India is bad enough driving outside of the cities, inside cities is mostly a big 'no-no'. I use drivers now and that's bad enough. I actually feel more comfortable when there are traffic jams, as I know any incident will be low speed...

I have been to India a few times and I would not contemplate driving. Most hotels are able to source you a car and driver for about £30-40 for the whole day with 100km's included. I bet this price can be beaten with a bit of research. You could try public transport if you want a real adventure ;-)

Good luck India is like no other place on earth, you will know the true meaning of culture shock!

Any thoughts on the Juhu area as a place to stay when in Mumbai?
