Last year at Easter we did San Francisco, Monterey, San Simone, Yosemite, Sacramento and back to SF. We hired a car and really enjoyed the holiday.

Next Easter we want to do Las Vegas for 3 days, the Grand Canyon, maybe Los Angeles for say a cople of days, and spend some time on the coast, say around Santa Barbara? We have 12 days max for the trip. We will probably do the Grand Canyon via a helicopter/plane flight from Vegas. I have a few questions...

Where would you fly into?

Las Vegas, and the Grand Canyon and time on the coast are given (yea, she has mandated this!)... LA is optional.

we also have the option of doing it in August, which is best, Easter or August?

Any of you guys like to offer any suggestions, comments?

Just done a very similar trip 10 days ago

This was our itinerary (worked a treat)

Flew into Las Vegas - 3 nights
Drive out to Grand Canyon NP via Hoover Dam - 2 nights in GCNP (we stayed on the RIM motel, awesome)
Drive out to Los Angeles - 3 nights (we did the drive in 1 day, set off 6.30am and got into LA for 2.30pm)
Drive up the Pacific Coast - 1 night at Pismo beach
Drive up the Pacific Coast - stopped at San Jose (work) before continuing up the HW1 towards San Fran

Amazing holiday; the number of days was just about right; not too much traveling and plenty of time doing stuff!

Last year started in Santa Monica for 4 days (flew into LAX) then drove to the Grand Canyon stayed over night at Tusayan which is right next to the North Rim. Saw the sun set then next day went in the plane for a fly around.
Then drove to Vegas via the Hoover Dam, stayed in Vegas for 3 days then drove back to LA and flew home.

LA to Vegas is an easy drive in one day and most of the scenery is iconic. Roads are faster than you'd expect (constant 90-110mph) but do look out for debris and cars having blow-outs.

Santa Monica is lovely as is most of the coastal area.

Hoover Dam is impressive.

Grand Canyon is incredible.

Las Vegas is like a different planet.

If you have any specific questions I'd be happy to answer them.

Have a great trip.

Fly into Las Vegas and back home from LA. Less hassle than driving back to Vegas. One way rental will be a bit more but worth it as you'll not be paying for fuel getting back to Vegas. I'd definitely recommend Easter time. Flights will be fair bit cheaper and weather wise it will be good. We go every April and the weather has never been anything less than great. You don't really want to be in Vegas in August if you can avoid it!
Will be there myself in just over a weeksmile

Have fun!
