Ok guys, I am having more wild thoughts of chopping my ageing but very faithfull legnum Vr-4 in for something more modern.

I am considering the Clio R.S 200 or the Fabia Vrs (needs to be an auto) I am drawn to their comparitively low tax group, peppy performance, dual clucth gearboxes and the [potential tuneability of thei repsective engines.

My main concern is the size of them, would I find space lacking with a family of 4? (our other car is a Toyota Yaris) with the 2 kids being 1 and 4.

how is the rear legroom? is the bootspace any good?

The performance side of things I am well aware of and the running costs of both of them will be significantly less than my 20mpg legnum that eats its 225 section tyres way too quickly, not to mention the 2000 mile oil changes!

Thanks

Gary

With two kids, one being at an age where a buggy is essential, I would be surprised if either would be much use. Most buggies take up masses of boot space, thus rendering the boot useless for shopping or holidays. The only true way to tell is a test drive, but be honest with yourself, it will only infuriate you later. smile

Seat Ibiza bocenegra here (same chassis as skoda and engine)

Engine pulls amazing and seems to average high 30's and the boot is much larger than the poo mk5 it replaced and easily large enough for a weekend away weekly shop etc

Do you do much shopping
Do you go on holidays using the car as transport to airport or ferry
Do you use a pram
Do you carry toys
Do you carry a changing bag with all the bits and bobs

Yes to any of the above may mean you'll probably struggle. We find a Leon a huge struggle with only 1 so

Yeah, try a Fabia VRS estate. Still might be a little on the small side for any trips away - could always get a roof box though!

Relative isn't it.

Clearly the OP is after a bit of fun with the car so how about a Focus ST estate or a Passat R36?

I have a Fabia vRS Estate and it's been pretty good. The boot will fit a washing machine whole and with seats down a road bike. But with a family I'd be tempted to get something bigger again. Went on holiday a few years ago with 3 cases and fishing gear and with 3 of us was a bit of a squeeze. But it's good enough for what I want but I'd suggest something bigger. Lots of Octavia Estates come with DSG and all are tuneable.

Well that is one the reasons why I am considering a smaller car, for 99% of the time there is just me in it, we live in a town near the town centre/train station and the amount of times the car has had all 4 of us in is down to a once a year familiy hloiday with perhaps one or two trips a year to my parents house.

I am just a bit concerned that when the time comes to load everyone in, am I then going to wish I had kept my legnum!

There is of course the option of a bigger hatchback but my need for an auto restricts me to the golf GTI and its other VAG deriveratives and thats about it!

Thanksyou for your responses though guys.

Tell you what go to a skoda dealership with the pram you use and put it into the boot ditto Clio and just see how much room there is. You may find it will not actually fit so you'd need a smaller or different pram to fit maybe.

Checking the basics fit is paramount if it does fit and you can see that the remaining room is plenty then you have the answer otwrwise nope. Also make sure the Mrs is involved with the purchase choice - sure commuting trips will be just you but all other trips even just to the shops will be all of you and for most people they shop weekly.

Next is they will start to go to sports clubs say football or rugby or may take up golf that lot will not fit.

What is your other car?

Worst case on the times you need more space hire another car or borrow your parents /inlaws.

They do the Skoda vRS as an estate/hatch and dealers seem to have a few ex-Skoda ones on their forecourts though they are not the last word in style.

Two on the forecourt of our local Skoda dealer. As I say, possible ex-Skoda management cars. Didn't check the other local Skoda dealer.
