Hi Guys, I would like some input on my situation.

So I currently have a Nissan 200sx S14a, basically it has a few problems, and ideally should not be driven at present (misfiring - cylinder 4 is down on pressure) Basically I need at least a few grand for a full engine rebuild, but obviously I wont have a car for a week or two whilst this is done anyway.

The tax on it is due at the end of this month, so I'm thinking about SORN'ing it and buying a daily shed/runabout to get me to work and back reliably.

As I've never done anything like this before, could I just transfer the insurance from the s14 to another car (insurer permitting) then just keep the S14 off the road? Do I need insurance on it despite being SORN?

I'm 21 and thinking about buying a car for around £1k, I don't do many miles so a DERV is not required. A Honda Accord 1.8, Mondeo 1.8 or (Shock horror) a Corsa C 1.0 for this. I will also keep the new car even when the S14 is fixed, as I no longer want to use the s14 for daily use.

Does this sound like the best plan in my situation? I have only ever had one car at a time and never had to declare SORN etc!

Thanks in advance.

Not answering many of your questions but yes you can just switch the car with your insurance(they may pay you back money if you paid yearly, or cheaper monthly payments if you pay monthly) as its going to be a lower insurance group. And the SORN'd car will not need insurance as its not going to be used on the road

That's answered my most important question, I heard something a bit back about SORN'd cars needing insurance as well but never looked into it.

Thanks!

Some people choose to have "laid up" insurance, as a caution in the event of fire/theft. It's not required, but may allow for peace of mind. It's fairly cheap as well (iirc).

Ah right, thanks for the clarification.
